GCRI is leading a pivotal campaign to establish National Working Groups (NWGs) across the globe dedicated to intertwining the rich cultural and environmental tapestries of nations with the forefront of global sustainability and innovation discussions. By capitalizing on each country's unique bioregional characteristics, the initiative aims to bolster both local and international resilience and development.

The Distinctive Role of Each Nation Every country presents a unique blend of ecological zones and cultural richness, offering distinct perspectives and practices vital for global sustainability efforts. From towering mountains and vast deserts to lush valleys and expansive wetlands, these diverse landscapes, coupled with deep-rooted cultural traditions, position each nation as an invaluable contributor to the planetary nexus of risk management and sustainable development. The traditional and communal practices of land stewardship and resilience found across various nations provide essential insights into sustainable living and biodiversity conservation.

Objectives of the National Working Groups: Harnessing Local Knowledge: Leverage the deep understanding and traditional practices of each nation's ecological systems for sustainable agriculture, water management, and conservation efforts, integrating these insights into global sustainability strategies. Climate Resilience and Adaptation: Focus on addressing vulnerabilities to climate change through the development of resilient practices and infrastructure, serving as models for bioregions with similar challenges globally. Cultural and Ecological Preservation: Prioritize the conservation of each nation's unique cultural landscapes and biodiversity, underscoring their importance in maintaining global ecological balance and cultural heritage.

Campaign Goals: Raising Funds for National Empowerment: To robustly support the establishment and operational needs of NWGs across various nations, ensuring active engagement in the development of policies, normative frameworks, and reflections of each country's unique environmental and cultural contexts. Building Capacities and Infrastructures: Equip NWGs with advanced tools, resources, and expertise to effectively lead in global risk management, climate resilience, and sustainable innovation, highlighting the strategic importance of each nation in global ecological health. Enabling Planetary Governance: Establish participatory frameworks that involve local communities, government bodies, and international partners in co-creating solutions that honor heritage and ecological wisdom while tackling modern challenges.

How You Can Contribute: Financial Support: Your contributions will directly support the foundational activities of NWGs, enabling a future where the unique contributions of each nation to global sustainability and resilience are recognized and valued. Awareness and Advocacy: Amplify our mission by sharing the story of each nation’s ecological and cultural significance, and the critical role these initiatives play in global sustainability efforts. Collaborative Partnerships: Join us in this pioneering effort, bringing your expertise and resources to enrich the impact of NWGs.

The Impact of Your Support: Contributing to the establishment of NWGs means fostering a future where the nexus of traditional wisdom and contemporary innovation cultivates resilience and sustainability, not just within national borders, but globally. This initiative commits to:

Utilizing each nation's unique bioregional insights for environmental and cultural preservation on a global scale. Creating models of sustainable development that integrate anthropological knowledge with modern climate science. Enhancing global risk management and resilience strategies through the diverse ecological and cultural landscapes of each nation.

Your support for the NWGs is a stride towards a resilient, sustainable, and inclusive global future. Together, we can unlock the potential of nations' unique bioregional attributes to contribute to a wealth of global knowledge, innovation, and resilience.

Letter to
Secretary-General of United Nations, António Guterres

We support the Summit's purpose to strengthen international cooperation, restore trust in multilateralism, and forge actionable commitments through the envisioned Pact for the Future. The proposals outlined in "Our Common Agenda" and the subsequent policy briefs offer a comprehensive framework for reinvigorating global governance, emphasizing solidarity across generations, and addressing the urgent needs of our planet and its inhabitants:

  1. Strengthening Multilateralism and Trust: We urge Member States to commit to a renewed multilateral system that is more inclusive, transparent, and effective. This requires meaningful reform of international institutions to ensure they are responsive to the needs of all, particularly the most vulnerable communities. We advocate for enhanced mechanisms for civil society engagement in UN processes, ensuring diverse voices contribute to shaping global policies.
  2. Accelerating the SDGs: The urgency to get the sustainability measures and standards back on track cannot be overstated. We call for increased investment in sustainability initiatives, particularly those addressing poverty, inequality, and climate action.
  3. Safeguarding the Future: The establishment of an Envoy to represent future generations is a groundbreaking proposal that we fully endorse. We also support the creation of dedicated forums and the application of foresight and science in policy-making to ensure the long-term sustainability of our actions today.
  4. Managing Global Shocks: The proposal for a time-bound Emergency Platform under the Secretary-General's authority is a critical step toward coordinated responses to global crises. We support CSOs to play a vital role in this platform, offering grassroots insights and rapid action capabilities.
  5. Meaningful Inclusion of Young People: The active participation of youth in decision-making processes is essential for building trust and shaping a future that meets their aspirations. We support the establishment of national youth consultative bodies and global standards that support youth engagement and future generations, ensuring their voices are not just heard but acted upon.
  6. Measuring What We Value: Moving beyond GDP to metrics that truly reflect human well-being and environmental health is a transformative approach we champion. We are keen to contribute to the development and implementation of these new metrics, aligning policy and investment decisions with sustainable development outcomes.

Moving Forward Together:

The time is ripe for us to advocate for policies and initiatives that not only address immediate concerns but are also proactive in anticipating and mitigating future risks. We envision a world where environmental stewardship, social justice, and ethical governance form the pillars of all decision-making processes.

As we move toward the Summit of the Future, we emphasize the importance of collaboration, transparency, and accountability in all our endeavors. The Pact for the Future represents a unique opportunity to commit to these ideals collectively, laying the groundwork for a global governance system that is fit for the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.
