At least 10 characters. A few words you remember work well.

A person reviews every new account before it can be used. We email you the outcome.

This decides which notices and age rules apply to you, and where we may offer an account. An automated check also uses it (see "About the automated check" below).

About the automated check

When you create an account, a computer checks automatically, under laws on international sanctions that apply to this organisation, whether we may open an account for you. No person looks at your details unless the check asks for one.

It uses: the country (and region) you choose here; the country your internet connection comes from, worked out from your IP address (the address itself is not kept); the country of an address or phone number you give, your browser's time zone and the ending of your email address; and your name, compared with official consolidated sanctions lists. Nothing else about you is used.

A refusal means that we cannot open an account for that location at this time because of those laws. It does not say anything about you, and it is not a finding that you did anything wrong.

A hold means the check could not decide on its own, for example because a name resembles one on a sanctions list (names are shared by many people). Your account waits, and a person on the compliance desk reviews every hold before anything else happens.

You can always ask for a person to review the result: use "Ask for a person to review this decision" on the page that shows it, or write to us quoting the reference you are given. A person reads your message, can change the result, and answers you by email.

Each box is its own choice. Read the document first: every link opens in a new tab, so nothing you typed is lost.
