STEM foundation of Cybersecurity and Digital Resilience

The science, technology, engineering and mathematics Cybersecurity and Digital Resilience rests on. Each method has a canonical page in the STEM Commons, hosted by GCRI, and a page here on how it is applied in this field.

01In brief

The short answer.

The Cybersecurity and Digital Resilience STEM foundation is the set of canonical methods its findings depend on, from cybersecurity and cryptography to quantum computing, sensing and communication. For the Consortium, Cybersecurity and Digital Resilience stewards cybersecurity and cryptography as well as software and safety-critical systems engineering. Each method has a canonical STEM Commons page and a page here on its use in the cyber and digital resilience field.

03Geography

Connected activity in Europe.

For STEM foundation of cybersecurity and digital resilience, in GCRI's spatial-intelligence reading, the map opens on night lights, true-colour imagery and population density with true colour from NASA GIBS, framed on Europe; every other NASA layer, live feed and forecast waits in the layer list.

The interactive map needs JavaScript; the layer list and sources are below.

05Method mix

Why cyber needs this combination of methods.

Cyber resilience needs cybersecurity and cryptography for controls, network science for shared dependencies, safety-critical software for systems with physical consequences, communications for the carrier networks, resilience engineering for recovery and quantum technology for the cryptographic transition. The combination matters because systemic cyber events cross all six: a faulty update is a software, network, communications and recovery problem at once.

Cyber resilience combines cybersecurity with safety-critical software, communications, network science, resilience engineering and quantum technology.

06Why it matters

Grounding makes claims checkable.

When a finding names the methods it depends on, a reader can see its assumptions and limits, and an expert in that method can challenge it.
