01In brief

The short answer.

The Oceans and Coasts community is the network of marine scientists and coastal planners who contribute expertise, review and data to its work on oceans and coasts, climate and hazards, and biodiversity and nature. They take part through moderated subject groups and working groups. Rules apply equally to all, interests are declared, and taking part gives no authority over findings.

From enquiry to contribution.

Canvas · from enquiry to contributionDesign, not a record
Specialist community: a working group from charter to sunsetA charter sets the question and the code of conduct; members join with declared interests; a workplan produces deliverables that are reviewed and credited; the group reports and sunsets or renews. Design of the process, not a record of a run.

03Geography

People and exposure in Pacific Island states.

For specialist community, in GCRI's spatial-intelligence reading, the map opens on population density, night lights, land cover and true-colour imagery with relief in 3D and true colour from NASA GIBS, framed on Pacific Island states; every other NASA layer, live feed and forecast waits in the layer list.

The interactive map needs JavaScript; the layer list and sources are below.

05Who the field needs

The professions that hold part of the ocean and coastal picture.

The ocean community joins physical and biological oceanographers, coastal engineers, fisheries scientists, port specialists and coastal communities. What they look for here is a shared reading of sea-level and ecosystem change that each can translate into designs, quotas or plans. Their methods are ocean science and ecology; their topics include fisheries and livelihoods.

  • Physical and biological oceanographers.
  • Coastal engineers.
  • Fisheries scientists.
  • Port and maritime specialists.
  • Coastal communities and fishers.
06Rules

How the community works.

  • Moderation follows published rules, applied the same way to everyone.
  • Personal data is used to run the community and is not shared for marketing.
  • Taking part gives no authority, appointment or influence over findings.
  • Conflicts of interest are declared before work begins.
07Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
Community of practiceA group of people who share a concern or a craft and learn to do it better by interacting regularly; the term comes from Lave and Wenger's work on situated learning.
Conflict of interestA situation in which financial, professional or personal interests could compromise, or appear to compromise, judgement in research or review.
Personal dataAny information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person, directly or indirectly, such as a name, an identification number, location data or an online identifier, as the EU General Data Protection Regulation defines it.
Coastal floodFlooding of coastal land by the sea, caused by high tides, storm surge and waves on top of mean sea level.
