GCRI · Energy Nexus

Mandate and publisher

Energy Nexus is published by The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI), the lead institution and Secretariat of the Nexus Consortium. This page sets out what the platform is mandated to study, who answers for what it publishes, the limits of its role and its current operating state. In short: Energy Nexus produces evidence on energy systems, their reliability and their dependencies; it does not operate, regulate or approve anything in them.

02Mandate

The science of energy systems and what depends on them.

The platform's mandate is energy systems, transitions, reliability and the cross-sector dependencies that sustain society. In practice that means three lines of work.

Reliability

Adequacy and security

Whether systems can meet demand under stress, using load and adequacy models and outage analysis.

Dependencies

Cross-sector links

How water, telecommunications, health, finance and compute depend on energy, and how energy depends on them.

Transitions

Changing systems

How new technologies, storage and electrified demand alter reliability and exposure.

03Publisher

GCRI answers for what Energy Nexus publishes.

GCRI works through two organisations: GCRI Canada, a Canadian not-for-profit organisation that is the lead organisation, the Consortium Secretariat and the global contracting party in support of the national and regional consortiums; and GCRI US, the United States institution of GCRI, a separate organisation with its own legal identity. Where one organisation acts alone, it is named.

Energy Nexus is part of the GCRI platform portfolio. Its community is grid engineers, utility operators, energy scientists, infrastructure planners and energy economists. Its signature outputs are energy resilience scenarios, grid-dependency briefs and transition evidence, all published with methods and uncertainty under methods and uncertainty.

04Limits

What Energy Nexus does not do.

  • It does not operate, dispatch or control any grid, plant or network.
  • It does not regulate, license, certify or approve plants, projects, products or operators.
  • It does not make nuclear safety determinations; those belong to independent national regulators.
  • It does not set tariffs, reliability standards or market rules, and it does not rank vendors or investments.
  • Contributing data or expertise confers no influence over findings, and sponsorship confers no editorial control.

Decisions remain with grid operators, regulators and governments under their own rules. See trust, rights and status.

05Operating state

Established; open for information and enquiries.

Energy Nexus is an established platform. Information and enquiries are open today. Records of activity, outputs and working groups appear on this site as each one is reviewed and released, and nothing is shown before its record exists.

06Questions

Questions and answers.

Is Energy Nexus a separate organisation?
No. It is a specialist platform of GCRI and has no separate legal identity.
Who are its counterparts at the other institutions?
The Global Risks Forum (GRF) governs and convenes on related questions, for example through Climate and Nature Governance, and The Global Risks Alliance (GRA) builds shared industry understanding through platforms such as Reinsurance and Catastrophe. All are listed on counterparts.
Can a company fund a specific study?
Any support is governed by written terms that preserve editorial independence and are disclosed with the output. Funding never buys a finding or a review outcome.
