STEM foundation of Space and Earth Observation

The science, technology, engineering and mathematics Space and Earth Observation rests on. Each method has a canonical page in the STEM Commons, hosted by GCRI, and a page here on how it is applied in this field.

01In brief

The short answer.

The Space and Earth Observation STEM foundation is the set of canonical methods its findings depend on, from Earth observation and remote sensing to physics and quantum science. For the Consortium, Space and Earth Observation stewards four of them, among them Earth observation and remote sensing as well as space systems and satellite services. Each method has a canonical STEM Commons page and a page here on its use in the space and Earth observation field.

03Geography

Earth observation in the Arctic.

For STEM foundation of space and earth observation, in GCRI's spatial-intelligence reading, the map opens on true-colour imagery and land cover with true colour from NASA GIBS, framed on the Arctic; every other NASA layer, live feed and forecast waits in the layer list.

The interactive map needs JavaScript; the layer list and sources are below.

05Method mix

Why Earth observation needs this combination of methods.

EO work combines Earth observation and geospatial methods with spatial statistics for accuracy, space systems and communications for the infrastructure, computing for processing and physics for sensors. Accuracy assessment ties them together: no EO product is used in a decision until its error against ground data is known for the place concerned.

EO work combines Earth observation, geospatial and spatial statistics with space systems, computing, communications and physics.

06Why it matters

Grounding makes claims checkable.

When a finding names the methods it depends on, a reader can see its assumptions and limits, and an expert in that method can challenge it.

Steward platformThe platform that maintains the canonical description of a method in the STEM Commons and reviews how other platforms apply it.
Earth observation and remote sensingEarth observation and remote sensing gather information about the Earth's surface and atmosphere from airborne and spaceborne sensors.
