The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI)
The science, technology, engineering and mathematics Climate and Hazards rests on. Each method has a canonical page in the STEM Commons, hosted by GCRI, and a page here on how it is applied in this field.

The Climate and Hazards STEM foundation is the set of canonical methods its findings depend on, from climate and atmospheric science to space systems and satellite services. For the Consortium, Climate and Hazards stewards three of them, among them climate and atmospheric science as well as Earth and geophysical science. Each method has a canonical STEM Commons page and a page here on its use in the climate and hazards field.
For STEM foundation of climate and hazards, in GCRI's spatial-intelligence reading, the map opens on daytime surface heat, flood water, rain and true-colour imagery with a past-year temperature chart at the centre, framed on World; 2 further NASA layers wait in the list.
The interactive map needs JavaScript; the layer list and sources are below.

Hazard science combines climate science and geoscience for the physics, ocean science and hydrology for coasts and rivers, forecasting and extreme value statistics for likelihood, Earth observation and space systems for monitoring, and computing for ensembles.
When a finding names the methods it depends on, a reader can see its assumptions and limits, and an expert in that method can challenge it.
Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| STEM Commons | The shared reference of science, technology, engineering and mathematics methods for the Nexus network, hosted by GCRI, with one canonical page per method and a named steward platform. |
| Steward platform | The platform that maintains the canonical description of a method in the STEM Commons and reviews how other platforms apply it. |
| Climate and atmospheric science | Climate science studies the physical processes that govern the atmosphere, oceans, cryosphere and land surface over seasons to centuries. |
| Earth and geophysical science | Geoscience studies the composition, structure and dynamics of the solid Earth, including earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides and subsurface resources. |
The bodies and documents this page is read against. Status and editions change; each link goes to the issuing body.
The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
