The science, technology, engineering and mathematics Data and Compute rests on. Each method has a canonical page in the STEM Commons, hosted by GCRI, and a page here on how it is applied in this field.

The Data and Compute STEM foundation is the set of canonical methods its findings depend on, from high-performance, cloud and edge computing to power systems engineering. For the Consortium, Data and Compute stewards high-performance, cloud and edge computing as well as data engineering, interoperability and stewardship. Each method has a canonical STEM Commons page and a page here on its use in the data and compute field.

For STEM foundation of data and compute, in GCRI's spatial-intelligence reading, the map opens on night lights, true-colour imagery and population density with true colour from NASA GIBS, framed on the contiguous United States; every other NASA layer, live feed and forecast waits in the layer list.
The interactive map needs JavaScript; the layer list and sources are below.

Data and compute risk combines computing and data engineering for the systems themselves, energy technology and power engineering for their supply, optimisation for placement, cybersecurity for protection and physics for cooling and hardware limits. Together they answer the platform's recurring question: whether critical analysis can keep running when power, water or providers are constrained.
Data and compute combine computing and data engineering with energy technology and power engineering, optimisation, cybersecurity and physics.
When a finding names the methods it depends on, a reader can see its assumptions and limits, and an expert in that method can challenge it.
Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| STEM Commons | The shared reference of science, technology, engineering and mathematics methods for the Nexus network, hosted by GCRI, with one canonical page per method and a named steward platform. |
| Steward platform | The platform that maintains the canonical description of a method in the STEM Commons and reviews how other platforms apply it. |
| High-performance, cloud and edge computing | High-performance, cloud and edge computing provide the processing and storage capacity for simulation, analytics and digital services. |
| Data engineering, interoperability and stewardship | Data engineering, interoperability and stewardship cover the pipelines, standards and governance that make data usable and trustworthy. |
The bodies and documents this page is read against. Status and editions change; each link goes to the issuing body.
The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
