01In brief

The short answer.

Data and Compute programmes organize its work on data and compute as well as energy at three levels: global priorities, regional applications and country work. Each programme shows its recorded status, from exploring and forming to active, paused or archived, and a plan is never presented as an activity. Countries take part through their national programmes and the Consortium Secretariat.

Programmes and projects: a programme through its gatesA request with a named owner becomes a scoping note; inputs are qualified at a gate; delivery runs in workstreams; a controlled test and an independent review precede publication; the owner decides. Design of the process, not a record of a run.

03Geography

Connected activity in the contiguous United States.

For programmes and projects, in GCRI's spatial-intelligence reading, the map opens on night lights, true-colour imagery and population density with true colour from NASA GIBS, framed on the contiguous United States; every other NASA layer, live feed and forecast waits in the layer list.

The interactive map needs JavaScript; the layer list and sources are below.

04Levels

Three levels of work.

05Three levels

How data and compute work is organised globally, regionally and nationally.

Data governance is negotiated globally, research infrastructures are often regional, and compute and data policy is national.

  • Global: data governance commitments and open science principles.
  • Regional: regional research infrastructures and data spaces.
  • National: national compute strategies, data laws and public cloud policy.
06Status

Every programme shows where it stands.

A programme is shown as exploring, forming, constituted, active, paused or archived, according to its record. A plan is never presented as an activity.

07Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
ProgrammeA group of related projects and activities managed together to obtain benefits that managing them separately would not, in the sense the Project Management Institute's programme standard uses.
Programme statusThe recorded state of a programme on Nexus pages: exploring, forming, constituted, active, paused or archived. A plan is never presented as an activity.
Country ownershipThe principle that a country leads its own development policies and strategies and coordinates the actions that support them, set out in the Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness.
Data infrastructureThe systems, standards and institutions that collect, store, describe, govern and share data.
10Questions

Questions and answers.

How does a country take part?
Through its national programme. Country enquiries go to the Consortium Secretariat at contact@therisk.global or a regional desk.
Data and Compute

Bring your expertise to this field.

The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
