Energy generation, storage and grid technology

Energy generation, storage and grid technology cover the devices and systems that produce, store and deliver energy. They shape the reliability, cost and emissions of energy supply on which all other sectors rely. Energy Nexus stewards this page for the Nexus Consortium.

02The method

What energy generation, storage and grid technology covers.

  1. 01

    Core methods

generation technology assessment; energy storage modelling; grid integration studies; techno-economic analysis; life cycle assessment; demand-side management.

  2. 02

    Data and instruments

plant performance records; grid operator data; smart meter data; resource assessment measurements; equipment test results.

  3. 03

    Validation

Technologies are evaluated through pilot deployments, standard testing and operational monitoring. Model results are compared with metered performance.

  4. 04

    Limits

Performance under extreme weather and at large scale may differ from tests. Supply chains for components and minerals are concentrated.

  5. 05

    Use in risk decisions

Energy technology assessment informs transition pathways that keep supply reliable during shocks. It links climate, materials and financial risks in the energy system.

Energy generation, storage and grid technology: N-1 contingency assessment

06In systemic risk work

New technologies change grid behaviour.

Inverter-based generation, batteries and flexible demand change how grids respond to disturbances: less inertia, faster control, more dependence on software and communications. Assessment needs dynamic studies, not only energy balances.

  • Assess system strength and inertia, not only capacity.
  • Include battery duration in adequacy studies.
  • Track supply-chain concentration for key components.
  • Applications on Energy Nexus and Data and Compute.
08Stewardship

Who maintains this page.

Energy Nexus stewards energy generation, storage and grid technology: it keeps this description current and reviews how the method is applied across the platforms.

10Questions

Questions and answers.

Why does one institution host every method page?
GCRI hosts the STEM Commons so that each method has one canonical description. Platforms link to it rather than repeat it, which keeps definitions consistent.
How do I suggest a correction to a method page?
Write to the integrity concern form with the passage and the reason.
