Usage and billing

Institutions need to know what they will be charged for before they commit. This page, published by The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI), explains how use of Nexus Foundry is designed to be metered, where the service boundary sits and the rule that no charge applies unless it was disclosed in writing beforehand. No prices are published on this page, and no charges apply at the current stage. The current service level is R0: information and enquiries.

01In brief

The short answer.

Nexus Foundry usage is how use of the environment is designed to be metered, where the service boundary sits and the rule that no charge applies unless it was disclosed in writing beforehand. No prices are published on the page, and no charges apply at the current stage.

02Geography

Connected activity in North America.

For usage and billing, in GCRI's spatial-intelligence reading, the map opens on night lights, true-colour imagery and population density, framed on North America; every other NASA layer, live feed and forecast waits in the layer list.

The interactive map needs JavaScript; the layer list and sources are below.

03Current state

Nothing is billed at R0.

At the current service level, Nexus Foundry provides information and receives enquiries. Contribution payments and computing allocations open only when their service team, terms and review capacity are in place. An enquiry never creates a charge.

04Metering

How use is designed to be measured.

Attribution

Metered to a project

Use is recorded and attributed to the programme and project that incurred it.

Units

Declared service units

Compute, storage and system use are measured in units defined in the agreement before work starts.

Separation

Cost kept apart from results

Usage is metered independently of scientific state, so budget pressure cannot change whether a result is reproduced or accepted.

05Service boundary

What is and is not part of the service.

  • The service covers the systems, rooms and support named in the institutional agreement.
  • Infrastructure contributed by others is recorded as an offer, not as reserved, consumed or funded capacity, until it is separately allocated.
  • Rails records instructions and receipts between institutions; it never moves funds itself.
  • Third-party services a project chooses to connect are governed by their own terms.
  • Offered capacity from a contributor never appears on a statement as if it were consumed or paid for.
06Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
Total cost of ownershipThe full cost of a system over its life, including energy, staff and facilities.
Egress feeA charge for transferring data out of a cloud provider's network.
Service level R0The current service level of Nexus pages: information and enquiries only. An enquiry receives a reference and a named next step; it creates no membership, contract, assignment or commitment.
07No undisclosed charges

Charges are written down first.

  1. 01

    Disclosure

Any fee appears only with the issuer, currency, effective date and applicable schedule recorded in writing.

  2. 02

    Agreement

Use is governed by an institutional agreement with the contracting party, GCRI Canada, or as that agreement provides.

  3. 03

    Statements

Metered use is reported to the project owner against the agreed units.

  4. 04

    Disputes

A question about a charge is reviewed by someone not responsible for the contested decision.

08Questions

Questions and answers.

How much does Nexus Foundry cost?
No prices are published. Terms are set in a written institutional agreement before any use is charged.
Does membership include compute?
No. Neither membership nor sponsorship secures a compute allocation, and a payment is never access to restricted data.
Can ordinary participants be charged?
Ordinary participation in working groups and learning carries no fee. Correction and integrity routes are never paywalled.
Who do I ask about terms?
Write to partnerships@therisk.global. The acknowledgement gives a reference and names the next step.
Can I see my project's usage?
The design reports metered use to the project owner against the agreed units, attributed to programme and project, so the owner can check it against the agreement.
