01In brief

The short answer.

Space and Earth Observation subject groups are moderated forums where remote-sensing scientists and space engineers discuss open questions in the space and Earth observation field, such as Earth observation sensors and spatial temporal evidence. Each group is listed once its moderation, terms and hosting are in place, with its scope and how to join. A group informs the platform's work and has no authority over its findings.

Subject groups: a working group from charter to sunsetA charter sets the question and the code of conduct; members join with declared interests; a workplan produces deliverables that are reviewed and credited; the group reports and sunsets or renews. Design of the process, not a record of a run.

03Geography

People and exposure in the Arctic.

For subject groups, in GCRI's spatial-intelligence reading, the map opens on true-colour imagery, population density and night lights with true colour from NASA GIBS, framed on the Arctic; every other NASA layer, live feed and forecast waits in the layer list.

The interactive map needs JavaScript; the layer list and sources are below.

04How it works

Subject groups in Space and Earth Observation.

  • Each entry shows its scope, host or owner, and terms.
  • Participation follows published rules, applied equally.
  • Taking part gives no authority or influence over findings.
05Group themes

Subjects where Earth observation specialists most need a shared forum.

EO groups are organised around validation, space-segment resilience and disaster mapping, each pairing producers of products with the agencies that use them.

  • Product validation.
  • Space resilience.
  • Disaster mapping.

07Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
Community of practiceA group of people who share a concern or a craft and learn to do it better by interacting regularly; the term comes from Lave and Wenger's work on situated learning.
Chatham House RuleA rule under which participants may use information received but may not reveal the identity or affiliation of speakers.
Space debrisNon-functional human-made objects in orbit, including dead satellites, rocket bodies and fragments.
Multispectral sensorA sensor that records reflected light in several distinct wavelength bands.
