Water Nexus is a specialist platform of The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI). Its mandate is the science of interdependent water systems: watersheds and aquifers, water services and the health, energy, food and economic resilience that depend on them. This page sets out who is responsible for the platform, what it is designed to do, the limits of its role and its current operating state.

01In brief

The short answer.

Water Nexus is a specialist platform of The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation for water, climate and hazards, and critical infrastructure. Its mandate covers the interdependence of water services, watersheds, human health, energy, food and economic resilience. GCRI publishes it, answers for its content and takes no decision on anyone's behalf. It is established and works at service level R0, information and enquiries.

Mandate to authority.

How Water Nexus is governedA mandate sets the platform's scope; an editor and reviewers govern what it publishes; programmes and the community supply the work; the integrity route handles corrections; authority over decisions stays outside. Design of the governance, not a record.

04Mandate

The science of water as a connected system.

Water Nexus exists to make evidence about water systems usable and checkable by the people who manage them, and to show where that evidence stops.

Field

Scope

Water, with its links to climate and hazards and to critical infrastructure: catchments, groundwater, extremes, drinking water and sanitation, utilities, shared basins, energy and food.

Community

Who takes part

Basin scientists, water utilities, municipal engineers, water agencies and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) researchers.

Outputs

What it is designed to publish

Watershed research briefs, public-safe basin maps and utility resilience case studies.

05Publisher

Who is responsible.

The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI) publishes Water Nexus and answers for its content. GCRI works across Canada and the United States.

  • Editorial responsibility sits with the platform's subject editors, who review each topic page and output before release.
  • Water Nexus is the steward of the STEM Commons pages for hydrology and water science and water and environmental engineering, which other platforms rely on.
  • Corrections and concerns go through the corrections route, and the platform's rights and status are set out on trust, rights and status.
06Role limits

What Water Nexus does not do.

  • It does not regulate water services, set drinking water standards or allocate water rights.
  • It does not certify, license, rank or approve any utility, product, project or institution.
  • It is not an emergency or incident service, and it issues no operational warnings.
  • Taking part, sponsoring or hosting gives no authority over findings.
  • Governance questions are convened at The Global Risks Forum (GRF), for example through Climate and Nature Governance; financial-sector questions belong with The Global Risks Alliance (GRA).

Water securityA population's capacity to keep reliable access to enough water of acceptable quality for health, livelihoods and production, and to be protected from water-related disasters and pollution.
Water stressFreshwater withdrawn by all sectors as a share of the renewable freshwater available once environmental flow requirements are met; SDG indicator 6.4.2 measures it.
08Operating state

Established, at service level R0.
