Research and evidence
The research behind Water Nexus: the questions it asks, the models and measurements it uses, how uncertainty is stated and how a result is reviewed and reproduced before it is published.

What the research asks.
- 01
Catchment hydrology
Catchment hydrology and the complete water balance.
- 02
Groundwater and aquifers
Groundwater depletion, recharge, contamination and rights.
- 03
Drought and flood
Compound water extremes, forecasts and limits.
- 04
Drinking water and sanitation
Treatment, safety, infrastructure and equity.
- 05
Water utilities
Utility asset condition and continuity during outages.
- 06
Shared river basins
Transboundary evidence and institutions.
What water science cannot yet answer well enough for decisions.
The research agenda starts from the places where basin decisions are made on weak evidence. Most are not about better hydrology in isolation but about the joins between water and the systems that depend on it.
- How should design floods and droughts be set when the record is non-stationary and the planning horizon is decades? See drought and flood.
- What is the groundwater contribution to drought resilience in basins with no monitoring network? See groundwater and aquifers.
- How far can satellite gravimetry and altimetry substitute for missing gauges in transboundary basins? See shared river basins.
- Which utilities fail first in a compound heat, drought and power event, and why? See water utilities.
- How does thermal power curtailment in low-flow years feed back on water allocation? See water-energy interdependence.
A question earns a place by the decision it serves.
Questions come from basin organisations, utilities and national water agencies through the contact desk and from the question step of the work cycle. One that names a decision-holder, a basin and a horizon is ready for research; one that does not is returned with the missing elements named.
Every result keeps its label.
Results are labelled as observed, published statistics, estimated, modelled, forecast, scenario or expert judgement. Missing data is shown as missing, never filled silently.
