GCRI · Nexus Ecosystem

Observatory

The Nexus of Observatories is the non-profit observation architecture of the Nexus ecosystem: an observatory capability in every platform and system, from remote sensing and in-situ measurement to edge deployments, including pilots implemented in Foundry. Each observation is published with the limits of its data. An observation starts an analysis. It is not a finding, a forecast or a warning. The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI) stewards the architecture. Part of Nexus ecosystem.

02Sources

Where observations come from.

Earth observation

Satellite and aerial data

Search, processing and change evidence through the NXS-EOP (earth observation and digital twins), without any implied authority to order paid acquisition.

Data

Public and reported datasets

Fused, versioned and traced through the NXS-GRX (canonical data, provenance and risk), with source rights and limitations kept attached.

Instruments

Measurement

In-situ instruments and edge deployments, with calibration evidence, where an authorised scope exists.

03Geography

Habitat condition worldwide.

Vegetation, land cover and plant growth across the world, from NASA GIBS. Each layer carries its own date.

04Limits

What every signal must say about itself.

Source data is uneven between countries, seasons and sensors. A signal that hides those differences would mislead, so each one carries its own description.

  • Its evidence label: observed, published statistics, institution-reported, estimated, modelled, forecast, scenario, expert judgement or unknown.
  • Its source, date, resolution and known gaps; missing data is shown as missing, never as zero.
  • Its rights: what may be reused, by whom and under which licence.
  • Its interpretation limits, such as cloud cover, revisit time, reporting lags or sampling bias.
05Boundaries

Observation is not warning.

The observatories issue no warnings, alerts or national statistics. Warnings stay with authorised parties, such as national hydrometeorological services. Public-safety work follows the boundaries on Early warning capability. The Consortium is not an emergency service. Decisions on observation and publication stay with the Consortium institutions.

06Publication

Where signals are published.

Reviewed signals are designed to appear in the Observatory Signal series of Reports. No signal is released yet. Related science: Earth observation. How such evidence reaches financial questions: The Global Risks Alliance (GRA), Models and professional methods.

07Questions

Questions and answers.

Does the Nexus of Observatories monitor people?
No. It works with environmental, infrastructure and public datasets under their rights. Signal work is limited to authorised observation, with no unauthorised collection.
Can I rely on an observatory signal for an emergency decision?
No. Use authority warnings from the competent authority. In immediate danger, contact your local emergency services.
Which countries does the Nexus of Observatories cover?
Observation follows the research scope of the six programme regions, subject to source availability and rights. Where a source does not cover a place or period, the gap is stated rather than filled.
Is the Nexus of Observatories a company or a product?
No. It is the Consortium’s non-profit observation architecture: an observatory capability built into each platform and system, stewarded by GCRI. Technology providers work at arm’s length and have no role in observation or publication decisions.
