Climate and atmospheric science
Climate science studies the physical processes that govern the atmosphere, oceans, cryosphere and land surface over seasons to centuries. It provides the basis for understanding changes in hazard frequency and intensity that propagate through economic and social systems. Climate and Hazards stewards this page for the Nexus Consortium.

What climate and atmospheric science covers.
- 01
Core methods
general circulation modelling; reanalysis; detection and attribution; dynamical and statistical downscaling; ensemble projection; paleoclimate reconstruction.
- 02
Data and instruments
surface weather stations; radiosondes; satellite radiometers; ocean profiling floats; ice and sediment cores.
- 03
Validation
Models are evaluated against observed climatology, historical trends and paleoclimate records. Multi-model comparison and process-based diagnostics expose structural differences.
- 04
Limits
Projections depend on emission pathways and on parameterised processes such as clouds and convection. Regional detail and changes in rare extremes carry wide uncertainty.
- 05
Use in risk decisions
Climate projections frame long-horizon scenarios for infrastructure, insurance, food systems and public finance. They allow correlated hazards across regions and sectors to be examined together.

Process
Climate and atmospheric science: Hazard, exposure, vulnerability
In IPCC AR6 Working Group II, climate risk results from interactions between hazards and a system’s exposure and vulnerability, and responses can add risk.
01 Drivers
- 01HazardDataset · Competent authorityThe potential occurrence of a natural or human-induced physical event or trend that may harm people, property, services or ecosystems.
- 02ExposureDataset · Competent authorityThe presence of people, livelihoods, species, ecosystems, infrastructure or assets in places and settings that could be adversely affected.
- 03SensitivityDataset · Competent authorityThe degree to which a system or species is affected, either adversely or beneficially, by climate variability or change.
- 04Capacity to cope and adaptDataset · Competent authorityThe ability of systems, institutions, humans and other organisms to adjust to damage, take opportunities or respond to consequences.
02 Assessment
- 05Risk from responsesComponent · Competent authorityRisks from climate responses arise when responses miss their objectives, or from trade-offs or negative side effects.
- 06VulnerabilityComponent · Competent authorityThe propensity or predisposition to be adversely affected. It includes sensitivity to harm and lack of capacity to cope and adapt.
- 07RiskModel · The Global Centre for Risk and InnovationRisk results from dynamic interactions between hazards and the system’s exposure and vulnerability. Each may be uncertain and change.
03 Response
- 08Risk management and responseStep · Competent authorityRisk management is plans, actions, strategies or policies that reduce the likelihood or size of adverse consequences.
- 09Residual riskRecord · Competent authorityThe climate impact risk that remains after adaptation and mitigation efforts. Adaptation can redistribute risk between areas and groups.
04 Decision
- 10Decision by the responsible partyDecision · Competent authorityThe framing names no single decision maker. Decisions on responses rest with the responsible party under its own rules.
Outline of an external standard or method, from its public sources. It describes what the framework says, not a record of any run. It does not show that Nexus or any partner performs, certifies or approves a step. A gate is a step of the method, never a Nexus approval.
Projections must match the decision they serve.
A climate projection used for a thirty-year infrastructure decision needs different handling from one used for seasonal food security planning. Three errors are common in risk work: using an ensemble mean as if it were a forecast, treating one emission scenario as the expected future, and ignoring the dependence between hazards that the same climate model produces consistently.
- Report ensemble spread and the scenario set, not only a central estimate.
- Use bias-corrected and downscaled products with their method named.
- Keep physically consistent joint hazards from the same model run when compound events matter.
- See the hazard applications on Climate and Hazards.
