01In brief

The short answer.

The science strand of the STEM Commons is the group of canonical science methods the Nexus network relies on, from hydrology and water science to policy, institutional and decision science. Each method has one page, a steward platform such as Water Nexus as well as Climate and Hazards, and a list of the platforms that apply it, so a finding can name what it rests on.

02Geography

Systemic exposure in the Gulf of Mexico coast.

Where people and networks concentrate, the exposure through which shocks travel between systems, shown for the Gulf of Mexico coast as an example geography for this subject.

04The science strand

Disciplines that explain how coupled systems behave.

The science strand covers the Earth and life sciences that describe hazards and ecosystems, and the social and economic sciences that describe exposure, vulnerability and response. Systemic analysis needs both: the physical chain from rainfall to river flow, and the social chain from river flow to income, health and migration.

  • Physical systems: climate, hydrology, geoscience, oceans.
  • Living systems: ecology, agriculture, epidemiology, life sciences.
  • Human systems: social science, economics, financial economics, policy science.

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
STEM CommonsThe shared reference of science, technology, engineering and mathematics methods for the Nexus network, hosted by GCRI, with one canonical page per method and a named steward platform.
Steward platformThe platform that maintains the canonical description of a method in the STEM Commons and reviews how other platforms apply it.
Hydrology and water scienceHydrology studies the movement, distribution and quality of water across the land surface, subsurface and atmosphere.
Climate and atmospheric scienceClimate science studies the physical processes that govern the atmosphere, oceans, cryosphere and land surface over seasons to centuries.
Earth and geophysical scienceGeoscience studies the composition, structure and dynamics of the solid Earth, including earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides and subsurface resources.

The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
