The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI)
Topics at Biodiversity Nexus: the pages in this section are listed below, each with its own scope and status.
The Biodiversity Nexus topics are the eight subject dossiers of its field, among them ecosystem integrity, species and genetic diversity, and forests and landscapes. Each dossier sets out how the risk develops, what is measured and in which units, the public sources and their licences, the methods, who decides and the limits of the evidence.
GCRI is a research, development and policy institution. It is not a regulator, and it does not certify, license or approve; its findings carry their methods and uncertainty.
The topics move from the state of nature (ecosystems, species, forests, wetlands, coasts) to what it provides (services), how it is restored and who controls the data about it.
Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Ecosystem condition | The quality of an ecosystem measured by its abiotic and biotic characteristics against a reference, as SEEA Ecosystem Accounting defines it. |
| IUCN Red List | The global assessment of species' extinction risk, with categories from Least Concern to Extinct based on standard criteria. |
| Tree cover loss | Removal or death of tree canopy detected by satellite, which includes harvest and fire and is not the same as deforestation. |
| Wetland | An area of marsh, fen, peatland or water, natural or artificial, permanent or temporary, including marine water up to six metres deep at low tide, in the Ramsar Convention's definition. |
| Coral bleaching | The loss of the algae living in coral tissue under heat stress, which turns coral white and can kill it if stress persists. |
