01In brief

The short answer.

Taking part in Health Nexus is open to public health, hospitals and clinicians and to institutions and national programmes working on health and biosecurity. Experts contribute knowledge, review or data; institutions follow the GCRI participation routes; countries go through the Consortium Secretariat. An enquiry receives a reference and creates no membership, role or influence over findings.

From enquiry to contribution.

Canvas · from enquiry to contributionDesign, not a record
Participation paths: a working group from charter to sunsetA charter sets the question and the code of conduct; members join with declared interests; a workplan produces deliverables that are reviewed and credited; the group reports and sunsets or renews. Design of the process, not a record of a run.

03Geography

Environmental exposure in Africa.

For participation paths, in GCRI's spatial-intelligence reading, the map opens on population density, true-colour imagery and night lights with true colour from NASA GIBS, framed on Africa; every other NASA layer, live feed and forecast waits in the layer list.

The interactive map needs JavaScript; the layer list and sources are below.

05Contributions that help

What specialists can contribute to health work.

Contributions to Health Nexus come mainly from epidemiologists, hospital managers, laboratory scientists and supply-chain analysts. What helps most is aggregated facility capacity data, review of surge scenarios and accounts of how past events actually stretched services. Contributions feed the health system continuity and health supply chains topics and are analysed with epidemiology and complex systems methods.

  • Facility capacity data under data-sharing terms.
  • Review of outbreak scenarios.
  • Clinical experience of surge events.
  • Community health worker insight.
06What it means

Participation and its limits.

  • An enquiry receives a reference; it does not create membership, a role or an assignment.
  • Taking part gives no authority, appointment or influence over findings.
  • Conflicts of interest are declared before work begins.

The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.

07Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
Declaration of interestsA written statement in which an expert or participant discloses financial, professional and personal interests that could constitute a real, potential or apparent conflict of interest, so that others can judge and manage it; WHO uses this procedure for its experts.
Service level R0The current service level of Nexus pages: information and enquiries only. An enquiry receives a reference and a named next step; it creates no membership, contract, assignment or commitment.
Community of practiceA group of people who share a concern or a craft and learn to do it better by interacting regularly; the term comes from Lave and Wenger's work on situated learning.
