STEM foundation of Health Nexus

The science, technology, engineering and mathematics Health Nexus rests on. Each method has a canonical page in the STEM Commons, hosted by GCRI, and a page here on how it is applied in this field.

STEM foundation of Health Nexus: event detection, verification and notificationIndicator-based and event-based signals are triaged and verified; the national focal point assesses the event with the Annex 2 decision instrument and notifies within 24 hours when it qualifies; response and after-action review follow. 01In brief

The short answer.

The Health Nexus STEM foundation is the set of canonical methods its findings depend on, from epidemiology and public health science to biotechnology platforms. For the Consortium, Health Nexus stewards epidemiology and public health science. Each method has a canonical STEM Commons page and a page here on its use in the health and biosecurity field.

02Geography

Access to care in Southern Africa.

How far each division sits from a large city, with the roads and airports that carry patients and supplies, shown for Southern Africa as an example geography for this subject.

04Method mix

Why health needs this combination of methods.

Health risk combines epidemiology and life sciences for the threat, probability and causal inference for evidence, complex systems for transmission and behaviour, data engineering for surveillance pipelines, and biotechnology for countermeasures.

05Why it matters

Grounding makes claims checkable.

When a finding names the methods it depends on, a reader can see its assumptions and limits, and an expert in that method can challenge it.

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
STEM CommonsThe shared reference of science, technology, engineering and mathematics methods for the Nexus network, hosted by GCRI, with one canonical page per method and a named steward platform.
Steward platformThe platform that maintains the canonical description of a method in the STEM Commons and reviews how other platforms apply it.
Epidemiology and public health scienceEpidemiology studies the distribution and determinants of health and disease in populations.
Molecular and life sciencesMolecular and life sciences study the structure and function of living systems from genes and proteins to cells and organisms.
