Molecular and life sciences

Molecular and life sciences study the structure and function of living systems from genes and proteins to cells and organisms. They underpin the understanding of pathogens, resistance, toxicity and biological innovation. Biotechnology and Biosecurity stewards this page for the Nexus Consortium.

02The method

What molecular and life sciences covers.

  1. 01

    Core methods

genome sequencing and assembly; phylogenetic analysis; functional assays; proteomics and metabolomics; cell and tissue culture; bioinformatic pipelines.

  2. 02

    Data and instruments

sequencing instruments; public sequence repositories; biobanks; laboratory assays; structural biology instruments.

  3. 03

    Validation

Results are confirmed through biological replicates, independent laboratories and orthogonal assays. Reference standards and proficiency testing check analytical accuracy.

  4. 04

    Limits

Laboratory findings do not always translate to organisms or populations. Sampling bias in sequence databases limits generalisation.

  5. 05

    Use in risk decisions

Life sciences support pathogen characterisation, antimicrobial resistance tracking and biosecurity assessment. They inform how biological threats might spread through health, agriculture and trade.

03Reference practice

Life sciences research is governed by biosafety and responsible-use frameworks.

Pages here describe capacity and oversight. They give no technical detail that would raise biological risk.

Molecular and life sciences: Life-science research oversight

Capacity and oversight only, following the WHO Laboratory biosafety manual (4th edition) and WHO life sciences framework, with no methods, agents or protocols.

  1. 01 Institution

    1. 01ProposalDatasetA research institution submits a proposal for review. The place is set by the page.
    2. 02Institutional committeeGate · The institutionA biosafety committee is an independent institutional review group, reporting to senior management. Review follows national rules.
    3. 03Conditions: risk control measuresStepA risk assessment sets the measures: core requirements, heightened control measures or maximum containment, not one biosafety level.
    4. 04Training and competenceStepActual risk depends on the agent, the procedure and staff competency. Training and personnel competence have their own section.
  2. 02 Assurance

    1. 05Audit and inspectionGateMany labs run cooperative inspections: periodic self-audits plus a rarer, deeper evaluation with the biosafety officer or committee.
    2. 06Emergency and incident responseStepThe manual covers emergency and incident response at each level of measures. External reporting of incidents depends on national rules.
  3. 03 National

    1. 07National oversightDecision · National DeskThe WHO framework is for those who govern biorisks, such as policy makers and regulators. National bodies set national rules.

Neutral outline of a published external standard or method, from its issuing body. Not a record of operation. Nexus does not perform, certify or approve any step shown. A gate or decision belongs to the party the source names. The Biological Weapons Convention is not drawn in this flow. The framework is the WHO global guidance framework for the responsible use of the life sciences.

05In systemic risk work

Capacity and oversight, not protocols.

For systemic risk the life sciences matter through capacity: the ability to identify a pathogen, develop countermeasures and manufacture them at scale. They also matter through oversight: how institutions review research with misuse potential. Analysis at GCRI addresses these at the level of systems and governance.

  • Assess diagnostic and countermeasure capacity as part of preparedness.
  • Treat oversight institutions (biosafety committees, review boards) as risk controls to assess.
  • Keep technical biological detail out of public outputs.
  • Oversight work sits on Biotechnology and Biosecurity.
07Stewardship

Who maintains this page.

Biotechnology and Biosecurity stewards molecular and life sciences: it keeps this description current and reviews how the method is applied across the platforms.

09Questions

Questions and answers.

Why does one institution host every method page?
GCRI hosts the STEM Commons so that each method has one canonical description. Platforms link to it rather than repeat it, which keeps definitions consistent.
How do I suggest a correction to a method page?
Write to the integrity concern form with the passage and the reason.
