The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI)
Regional Systems examines shared exposures across neighbouring countries: transboundary basins, regional grids, shared seas, trade corridors and disease pathways.
Regional Systems is the Nexus Reports series on cross-border and regional evidence on shared basins, grids, corridors, disease and information. Contributions come from platforms such as Diplomacy Nexus as well as Climate and Nature Governance. Editors follow the series method, and each edition is listed with its date, method and version history once released; a planned edition is never shown as published.
Where people and networks concentrate, the exposure through which shocks travel between systems, shown for Europe as an example geography for this subject.
An edition chooses a region and a coupling (for example a shared river and the power pool that depends on it) and analyses how a shock would cross borders.
| Element | In this series |
|---|---|
| Unit of analysis | A region defined by a shared system, not only by geography |
| Method | Transboundary system mapping, regional scenario analysis, review of regional agreements |
Each edition is listed with its date, method and version history. A planned edition is never shown as released.
Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Transboundary basin | A river, lake or aquifer basin shared by two or more countries, where use upstream changes the water, sediment and risk that arrive downstream. |
| Spillover | The transmission of a pathogen from an animal host population to people or to another species. |
| Multi-level governance | Shared decision-making across local, regional, national and international levels of government. |
| Editorial independence | The condition in which editors decide what is published on the validity and relevance of the work, free from interference by owners, funders or sponsors, as ICMJE and COPE guidance describe it. |
