Every engineering method in the STEM Commons, its steward platform and how widely it is applied.
GCRI · Institution · service level R0
The engineering strand of the STEM Commons is the group of canonical engineering methods the Nexus network relies on, from systems engineering to financial and risk engineering. Each method has one page, a steward platform such as Systems Science and Modelling as well as Critical Infrastructure, and a list of the platforms that apply it, so a finding can name what it rests on.
Where people and networks concentrate, the exposure through which shocks travel between systems, shown for World as an example geography for this subject.
Engineering contributes the practice of designing to a stated level of safety or reliability and demonstrating that the design achieves it. Its codes of practice (structural codes, functional safety standards, process safety barriers) are the most mature risk-management instruments any field has, and the question in systemic work is how to extend them from single assets to interdependent systems.
Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| STEM Commons | The shared reference of science, technology, engineering and mathematics methods for the Nexus network, hosted by GCRI, with one canonical page per method and a named steward platform. |
| Steward platform | The platform that maintains the canonical description of a method in the STEM Commons and reviews how other platforms apply it. |
| Systems engineering | Systems engineering is an interdisciplinary approach to designing and managing complex systems over their life cycle. |
| Reliability and resilience engineering | Reliability and resilience engineering studies how systems fail, how failures can be prevented and how systems absorb, adapt and recover from disruption. |
| Power systems engineering | Power systems engineering designs and operates the networks that generate, transmit and distribute electricity. |
The bodies and documents this page is read against. Status and editions change; each link goes to the issuing body.
The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
