Subject groups

Moderated groups where specialists discuss questions in Trade and Strategic Resources. Each group is listed here when its moderation, terms and hosting are in place, with its scope and how to join.

01In brief

The short answer.

Trade and Strategic Resources subject groups are moderated forums where trade economists and logistics operators discuss open questions in the trade, resources and supply chains field, such as trade corridors and chokepoints and critical minerals. Each group is listed once its moderation, terms and hosting are in place, with its scope and how to join. A group informs the platform's work and has no authority over its findings.

From enquiry to contribution.

Subject groups: a working group from charter to sunsetA charter sets the question and the code of conduct; members join with declared interests; a workplan produces deliverables that are reviewed and credited; the group reports and sunsets or renews. Design of the process, not a record of a run.

03Geography

People and exposure in the Strait of Malacca.

For subject groups, in GCRI's spatial-intelligence reading, the map opens on night lights, population density and true-colour imagery with true colour from NASA GIBS, framed on the Strait of Malacca; every other NASA layer, live feed and forecast waits in the layer list.

The interactive map needs JavaScript; the layer list and sources are below.

04How it works

Subject groups in Trade and Strategic Resources.

  • Each entry shows its scope, host or owner, and terms.
  • Participation follows published rules, applied equally.
  • Taking part gives no authority or influence over findings.
05Group themes

Subjects where supply chain specialists most need a shared forum.

Supply-chain groups bring materials engineers, trade economists and logistics specialists together, because concentration at the refining stage, substitution limits and rerouting capacity are three halves of one question.

  • Critical minerals.
  • Maritime chokepoints.
  • Supply-chain mapping.

07Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
Community of practiceA group of people who share a concern or a craft and learn to do it better by interacting regularly; the term comes from Lave and Wenger's work on situated learning.
Chatham House RuleA rule under which participants may use information received but may not reveal the identity or affiliation of speakers.
ChokepointA narrow passage or node through which a large share of trade must pass.
ReroutingDiverting ships to an alternative, usually longer, route when the usual one is closed or unsafe.

The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
