Specialist community

Who takes part in Trade and Strategic Resources, what they contribute and how moderation and privacy work.

01In brief

The short answer.

The Trade and Strategic Resources community is the network of trade economists and logistics operators who contribute expertise, review and data to its work on trade, resources and supply chains as well as industry and robotics. They take part through moderated subject groups and working groups, and chapters such as Critical Minerals and Materials. Rules apply equally to all, interests are declared, and taking part gives no authority over findings.

Specialist community: a working group from charter to sunsetA charter sets the question and the code of conduct; members join with declared interests; a workplan produces deliverables that are reviewed and credited; the group reports and sunsets or renews. Design of the process, not a record of a run.

03Geography

People and exposure in the Strait of Malacca.

For specialist community, in GCRI's spatial-intelligence reading, the map opens on population density, night lights and true-colour imagery with true colour from NASA GIBS, framed on the Strait of Malacca; every other NASA layer, live feed and forecast waits in the layer list.

The interactive map needs JavaScript; the layer list and sources are below.

05Who the field needs

The professions that hold part of the supply chain picture.

The community spans trade economists, materials and mining engineers, logistics and maritime specialists, industrial policy analysts and responsible-sourcing practitioners. They meet over one question: where a chain has no substitute and how long it would take to build one. Their methods are network science and optimisation, and their topics include corridors and chokepoints.

  • Trade economists and supply-chain analysts.
  • Mining and materials engineers.
  • Logistics and maritime specialists.
  • Industrial policy specialists.
  • Responsible sourcing practitioners.
06Rules

How the community works.

  • Moderation follows published rules, applied the same way to everyone.
  • Personal data is used to run the community and is not shared for marketing.
  • Taking part gives no authority, appointment or influence over findings.
  • Conflicts of interest are declared before work begins.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
Community of practiceA group of people who share a concern or a craft and learn to do it better by interacting regularly; the term comes from Lave and Wenger's work on situated learning.
Conflict of interestA situation in which financial, professional or personal interests could compromise, or appear to compromise, judgement in research or review.
Personal dataAny information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person, directly or indirectly, such as a name, an identification number, location data or an online identifier, as the EU General Data Protection Regulation defines it.
Strategic resourceAn input whose loss would seriously harm an economy or security because it is essential and hard to replace.

The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
