01In brief

The short answer.

The Water Nexus methods page sets out the methods the platform relies on, among them hydrology and water science, water and environmental engineering, and geospatial information systems, with their assumptions, validation and limits. Each analysis lists its assumptions and data, reports ranges and confidence beside central estimates, is checked against observations or other models, and states what it cannot show.

02Canvas

Draft to published version.

Methods and uncertainty: risk as hazard, exposure and vulnerabilityRisk arises from the interaction of hazard, exposure and vulnerability (sensitivity and adaptive capacity); responses act on each driver and leave a residual risk that is monitored. Design of the process, not a record of a run.

03Geography

Water security in the Lake Chad Basin.

Rivers, lakes and how far each division sits from mapped surface water, shown for the Lake Chad Basin as an example geography for this subject.

06Uncertainty

Where uncertainty in water risk comes from, and how it is shown.

SourceTypical sizeHow it is reported
Rainfall inputLarge in convective and mountain climates; gauge networks are sparseEnsembles of rainfall products; spread carried to flow
Model structureDiffers most in low flows and groundwater exchangeMulti-model comparison on the same basin
ParametersEquifinality: many parameter sets fit the same recordRanges from calibration, not a single best fit
Non-stationarityGrows with horizon and land-use changeTrend-aware extreme value models, scenario sets
Human operationsReservoir rules and abstractions often undocumentedStated assumptions, sensitivity runs

A flow estimate is published with its range and the evidence label of each input. Return periods are reported with confidence intervals, and a design value is never quoted without the period of record it rests on.

07Uncertainty

How uncertainty is reported.

  1. 01

    State assumptions

Each analysis lists its assumptions and the data it depends on.

  2. 02

    Quantify where possible

Ranges and confidence are reported alongside central estimates.

  3. 03

    Validate and compare

Models are checked against observations and, where possible, against other models.

  4. 04

    Publish limits

What an analysis cannot show is stated beside what it can.

08Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
Uncertainty quantificationCharacterising and propagating the uncertainties in a model to state confidence in its outputs.
Sensitivity analysisRepeating an analysis under different assumptions to show how much the result depends on them.
Model validationComparing model predictions with independent observations to judge fitness for a stated use.
Hydrology and water scienceHydrology studies the movement, distribution and quality of water across the land surface, subsurface and atmosphere.

Are the methods open?
Method descriptions are public on the STEM Commons. Code and data follow their own licences and access terms, listed in the source register.
