Specialist community

Who takes part in Disaster Resilience and Recovery, what they contribute and how moderation and privacy work.

01In brief

The short answer.

The Disaster Resilience and Recovery community is the network of disaster scholars and emergency planners who contribute expertise, review and data to its work on disaster and crisis as well as climate and hazards. They take part through moderated subject groups and working groups. Rules apply equally to all, interests are declared, and taking part gives no authority over findings.

Specialist community: a working group from charter to sunsetA charter sets the question and the code of conduct; members join with declared interests; a workplan produces deliverables that are reviewed and credited; the group reports and sunsets or renews. Design of the process, not a record of a run.

03Geography

People and exposure in the Philippines.

For specialist community, in GCRI's spatial-intelligence reading, the map opens on population density, true-colour imagery and night lights with true colour from NASA GIBS, framed on the Philippines; every other NASA layer, live feed and forecast waits in the layer list.

The interactive map needs JavaScript; the layer list and sources are below.

  • Disaster risk managers and civil protection officers.
  • Humanitarian practitioners.
  • Urban planners and engineers.
  • Social scientists studying preparedness and recovery.
  • Local responders and community leaders.
06Rules

How the community works.

  • Moderation follows published rules, applied the same way to everyone.
  • Personal data is used to run the community and is not shared for marketing.
  • Taking part gives no authority, appointment or influence over findings.

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
Community of practiceA group of people who share a concern or a craft and learn to do it better by interacting regularly; the term comes from Lave and Wenger's work on situated learning.
Conflict of interestA situation in which financial, professional or personal interests could compromise, or appear to compromise, judgement in research or review.
Personal dataAny information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person, directly or indirectly, such as a name, an identification number, location data or an online identifier, as the EU General Data Protection Regulation defines it.
Disaster risk reductionPreventing new and reducing existing disaster risk and managing residual risk, contributing to resilience and sustainable development.

The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
