01In brief

The short answer.

Food Nexus research is the evidence work behind the platform: questions such as agricultural production and food security and access, answered with agricultural, soil and food science as well as ecology and biodiversity science and reviewed before publication. Every result carries an evidence label, from observed to modelled or expert judgement, and missing data is shown as missing, never filled silently.

03Geography

Food systems and trade routes in Viet Nam.

Plains, deltas and basins, the corridors that carry food to ports, and how far each division sits from one, shown for Viet Nam as an example geography for this subject.

05Open questions

What food system research cannot yet answer well enough for decisions.

Food crises are rarely caused by a single harvest failure. The research agenda follows the chain from weather and soils to prices, incomes and diets, and asks where the chain is least understood.

  • How likely are simultaneous yield shortfalls across the main grain-exporting regions under current and projected climate, and how well do crop models capture that dependence? See food system shocks.
  • How fast and how fully do world price spikes pass through to local markets in import-dependent countries? See food trade and markets.
  • What share of post-harvest loss is driven by cold-chain and storage failure during power outages and heat? See storage and cold chain.
  • How does fertiliser dependence on natural gas transmit energy shocks into the next season's yields? See food, water and energy.
  • Which soil and land indicators give early warning of declining productive capacity before yields fall? See soil and land.
06Evidence

Every result keeps its label.

Results are labelled as observed, officially reported, estimated, modelled, forecast, scenario or expert judgement. Missing data is shown as missing, never filled silently.

07Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
Research integrityConduct of research in line with principles of reliability, honesty, respect and accountability, as the European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity sets them out.
Evidence labelA tag on an assertion naming the kind of evidence behind it, such as observed, officially reported or modelled.
ReproducibilityObtaining consistent results using the same data and analysis code as the original study.
Vegetation condition anomalyThe departure of a satellite vegetation index from its long-term average for the same place and time of year, used to flag crop stress.

10Questions

Questions and answers.

Can I propose a research question?
Yes. Write to contact@therisk.global with the question, the context and who would use the answer. A proposal receives a reference; it does not commit the platform to the work.
