01In brief

The short answer.

The Food Nexus source register lists the datasets and records the platform draws on, such as FAOSTAT production, inputs and land-use domains, each with its producer, licence and permitted uses, quality and known gaps. A source is listed only once its terms permit the use described, and data held by agreement is used under those terms and never republished.

Source and data register: from a source to a labelled evidence recordA source is registered with its licence and steward, checked for quality and coverage, labelled by evidence class, versioned and published with a passport; corrections create a new version. Design of the process, not a record of a run.

03Geography

Digital demand and connectivity in North America.

Urban demand centres and the hubs that anchor digital and data infrastructure, shown for North America as an example geography for this subject.

Who produces the data and how.

02

Access terms

Licence, restrictions and permitted uses.

03

Quality

Coverage, resolution, update frequency and known errors.

04

Provenance

How the data reached the platform and what was changed.

06Known gaps

Where the food system data record is thin.

  • Stock levels held by governments and traders, which decide how much of a shock is absorbed.
  • Subnational yield data in many producing countries, where national averages hide failed districts.
  • Post-harvest loss measurement, which is sparse and methodologically inconsistent.
  • Informal cross-border trade, which feeds many local markets but appears in no customs record.

Where satellite crop condition or model estimates stand in for missing statistics, the page carries the modelled or estimated label.

07Status

How the register grows.

Sources are added to the register as they are reviewed. A source is listed only once its terms permit the use described.

08Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
ProvenanceInformation about the entities, activities and people involved in producing a record, used to judge its quality and reliability, in the W3C PROV model.
FAIR principlesGuiding principles that make data findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable by people and machines.
Open licenceA licence that allows anyone to access, reuse and redistribute data, sometimes with attribution.
Data lineageThe traceable path of data from its origin through each transformation to its current form.
09Sources

Where this page's references lead.

The bodies and documents this page is read against. Status and editions change; each link goes to the issuing body.
