What food system research cannot yet answer well enough for decisions.
Food crises are rarely caused by a single harvest failure. The research agenda follows the chain from weather and soils to prices, incomes and diets, and asks where the chain is least understood.
- How likely are simultaneous yield shortfalls across the main grain-exporting regions under current and projected climate, and how well do crop models capture that dependence? See food system shocks.
- How fast and how fully do world price spikes pass through to local markets in import-dependent countries? See food trade and markets.
- What share of post-harvest loss is driven by cold-chain and storage failure during power outages and heat? See storage and cold chain.
- How does fertiliser dependence on natural gas transmit energy shocks into the next season’s yields? See food, water and energy.
- Which soil and land indicators give early warning of declining productive capacity before yields fall? See soil and land.
Every result keeps its label.
Results are labelled as observed, published statistics, estimated, modelled, forecast, scenario or expert judgement. Missing data is shown as missing, never filled silently.
