The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI)
The Future of X labs are laboratory programmes in development of Nexus Labs, a platform of The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI), each looking ahead at how one domain of work and life could change and what evidence that change needs. This page is the index of those programmes, with the charter and operating state of each. A lab is shown as chartered or operating only when a charter record exists; until then it is listed as in development. The current service level is R0: information and enquiries.

Layers and dates
A lab in development has a defined focus and a topic page. It has no staff, budget, site or results until a charter is recorded.
The focus and questions are described. No charter has been adopted.
A charter names the lab's lead, host institution, scope, ethics arrangements and review plan.
Authorized experiments or challenges are under way, listed on the experiments page.
Activity has stopped. Records and published evidence remain available.
Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Strategic foresight | A structured and systematic way of using ideas about the future to anticipate and prepare for change, in OECD usage. |
| Living lab | A real-life setting in which users and communities take part in developing and testing innovations. |
| Horizon scanning | A systematic search for early signs of emerging risks and opportunities beyond current planning. |
GCRI describes the Future Labs programme on GCRI Future Labs. Evidence from labs is designed to feed the Labs Evidence series of Nexus Reports, and testbed protocols can be exercised in the annual Nexus Universe programme governed by The Global Risks Forum (GRF), described on Nexus Universe exercises and learning.
The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
