Experiments

Nexus Labs is the platform of The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI) for interdisciplinary experiments, technical research, methods and supervised innovation challenges. This page lists experiments once each has been authorized: a reviewed protocol, a named principal investigator, the safeguards that apply and a plan for making the result reproducible. No experiment is shown until its record exists. The current service level is R0: information and enquiries.

01In brief

The short answer.

Nexus Labs experiments are authorized research studies, each with a reviewed protocol, a named principal investigator, the safeguards that apply and a plan for making the result reproducible. An experiment is listed only once its record exists, and its result is published whether it supports the hypothesis or not.

02Geography

Hazards and exposure in World.

For experiments, in GCRI's spatial-intelligence reading, the map opens on true-colour imagery and land cover with true colour from NASA GIBS, framed on World; every other NASA layer, live feed and forecast waits in the layer list.

The interactive map needs JavaScript; the layer list and sources are below.

03Authorization

An experiment is listed only once it is authorized.

Protocol

A reviewed protocol

Question, hypothesis, method, inputs, controls, evaluation and safety, written before any run, as set out under protocols and research design.

Responsibility

A named investigator

The principal investigator, the supervising institution and the reviewers, with their declared conflicts.

Safeguards

Safeguards in force

Ethics review where people are involved, data permissions, site safety and stop conditions.

04Reproducibility

A completed run is not a valid result.

In the design of the Labs system in Nexus Foundry, the protocol and each run are recorded separately: the protocol says what should happen, the run records what actually executed, with the environment, data cut and code version. Reproduction attempts are recorded with their outcome. A run can finish without producing a valid result, and the record says so. See the Labs system for the technical model.

05Current state

No experiment is listed yet.

Experiments appear here once authorized and once their investigators agree to publication. Some experiments are not listed publicly because their data or sites are restricted; their results can still be published on published evidence when released.

StateMeaning
AuthorizedProtocol reviewed, safeguards in place; runs may start
RunningRuns under way and recorded
Under reviewResults being reproduced and independently reviewed
ConcludedResult accepted, rejected or inconclusive, and recorded
StoppedHalted by a stop condition or a safeguard, with reasons
06Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
Pre-registrationPublishing an evaluation's design and analysis plan before results are known.
Computational reproducibilityRe-running the original data and code and obtaining the reported results.
Research ethics approvalApproval of a study protocol by an independent ethics committee before data collection involving people.
07Safeguards

Safeguards that apply to every experiment.

  • Experiments involving people follow the human subjects rules on the protocols page.
  • Experiments never touch live operational systems, warnings or funds.
  • Agents may assist, but their actions are attributed and remain assertions until reviewed.
  • Concerns can be raised by anyone at integrity@therisk.global.
08Questions

Questions and answers.

Can I propose an experiment?
Yes. Write to research@therisk.global with a short outline of the question and method. The acknowledgement gives a reference and names the next step. A proposal is not an authorization.
Who funds experiments?
Each experiment's record discloses its funding. No funder can influence a result or block its publication.
Are experiments run in Nexus Foundry?
Authorized experiments are designed to run in the Labs system of Nexus Foundry, inside an authorized project with its own permissions.
What happens if an experiment fails?
A failed or inconclusive experiment is recorded and can be published. Negative results are part of the evidence.
Can an experiment be stopped by someone outside the team?
Yes. Reviewers, the supervising institution and the platform can pause an experiment that breaches its protocol or safeguards. The reasons are recorded.

The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
