Participate in research

Nexus Labs, a platform of The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI), is designed to welcome research teams, universities, engineers, student teams and scientists into supervised research. This page explains the terms that protect everyone who takes part: who supervises the work, who owns what is made, which ethics rules apply and how contributions are credited. Applications open when their terms and review capacity exist; until then, you can register interest. The current service level is R0: information and enquiries.

01In brief

The short answer.

Research participation at Nexus Labs is how research teams, universities, engineers, student teams and scientists join supervised work, under terms that state who supervises, who owns what is made, which ethics rules apply and how contributions are credited. Applications open when terms and review capacity exist.

02Geography

Hazards and exposure in World.

For participate in research, in GCRI's spatial-intelligence reading, the map opens on true-colour imagery, population density and land cover with true colour from NASA GIBS, framed on World; every other NASA layer, live feed and forecast waits in the layer list.

The interactive map needs JavaScript; the layer list and sources are below.

03Supervision

Every participant has a named supervisor.

Students, early-career researchers and volunteers work on safe tasks with a mentor and a learning plan, never on an unsupervised high-consequence assignment. Senior contributors work to a written scope with a named reviewer.

04Intellectual property

Ownership and licences are agreed before work starts.

  • Each project's terms state who owns what is created, and the licence for data, code and publications.
  • Participants keep the rights in their prior work unless they agree otherwise in writing.
  • Contribution and rights terms are part of the research protocol and the resource decision.
  • Nothing is published using a participant's work beyond what the terms allow.
05Ethics

The same ethics rules for every participant.

Design

Protocols first

Work follows protocols and research design, including human subjects rules.

Integrity

Independent scrutiny

Negative findings and independent scrutiny always remain possible, whoever funds the work.

Concerns

Safe routes to raise concerns

Integrity concerns go to integrity@therisk.global; safeguarding concerns to safeguarding@therisk.global.

06Credit

Contributions are credited accurately.

  1. 01

    Authorship

Authorship follows contribution, agreed openly and recorded with the result.

  2. 02

    Contribution records

Each participant can receive a record of what they did, under whose supervision.

  3. 03

    Limits

A contribution record is not a degree, a professional licence or a promise of employment.

07Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
Contributor role statementA structured record of each person's part in a research output, often using the CRediT taxonomy of fourteen roles maintained by NISO.
Research ethics approvalApproval of a study protocol by an independent ethics committee before data collection involving people.
Invention disclosureA researcher's formal report of an invention to their institution's technology transfer office.
08Privacy

How your information is used.

An expression of interest is used to answer you and to keep a record. It is never used for marketing or shared with The Global Risks Forum (GRF) or The Global Risks Alliance (GRA). Requests about your data go to privacy@therisk.global, and GCRI's notice is on privacy and data.

09Questions

Questions and answers.

Is there a fee to take part?
No fee applies to ordinary participation. Any payment for professional work is set out in written terms before the work starts.
Can I take part from outside a university?
Yes. Engineers, practitioners and independent scientists can take part under the same terms, subject to the eligibility policy.
How do I register interest?
Write to research@therisk.global with your field and the kind of work you are looking for. Students and experts can also see GCRI pathways for experts and students.
What if I disagree with how my work is credited?
Raise it with your supervisor, or with integrity@therisk.global. Disputes are reviewed by someone not responsible for the contested decision.
