Institutional research

Research at The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI) examines systemic risk where it is felt: in the coupled systems of water, energy, food, health, biodiversity and infrastructure, and in the frontier technologies that change both exposure and capability. This page sets out the research agenda, how research is governed and how initiatives are approved. Approved initiatives are listed here with their protocol and owner once recorded; none is listed yet. Return to GCRI programmes.

01In brief

The short answer.

Research at GCRI examines systemic risk where it is felt, in the coupled systems of water, energy, food, health, biodiversity and infrastructure, and in the frontier technologies that change exposure and capability. The page sets out the research agenda across twelve domains, how research is governed and how initiatives are approved; none is listed yet.

Scoping to review.

Institutional research: a programme through its gatesA request with a named owner becomes a scoping note; inputs are qualified at a gate; delivery runs in workstreams; a controlled test and an independent review precede publication; the owner decides. Design of the process, not a record of a run.

05Governance

How research is governed.

  1. 01

    Protocol

Each initiative has a protocol with its question, methods, data, rights and publication route.

  2. 02

    Conflicts

Researchers and reviewers declare interests; a conflicted reviewer does not sign acceptance.

  3. 03

    Review

Findings are accepted on method by qualified, conflict-managed reviewers.

  4. 04

    Disclosure

Funding and review are disclosed with each publication.

  5. 05

    Correction

Negative findings and independent scrutiny always remain possible, and corrections create new versions.

06Initiatives

Approved initiatives.

None is listed yet. An initiative appears here once its protocol, owner and resources are recorded. Universities and institutes can propose research or independent review through Universities and researchers, and outputs appear in the Research library when released.

07Approach

Five commitments of the Nexus method.

  1. 01

    Model dependencies, not silos

Each analysis states the systems it couples, the transmission mechanism and its assumptions.

  2. 02

    Keep evidence distinct

Observed, reported, estimated, modelled, forecast and scenario results carry their own labels.

  3. 03

    Test compound scenarios

Examine how events combine and propagate rather than scoring hazards one at a time.

  4. 04

    Start from places

Questions come from national demand and local knowledge, with rights-holders involved on their own terms.

  5. 05

    Carry analysis to tested action

Findings move into exercises and handoffs, and results return as corrections.

08Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
Research agendaA stated set of priority questions, usually adopted by a funder, agency or network, that guides what research is commissioned.
Research governanceThe rules, institutions and practices that decide how research is commissioned, reviewed, shared, corrected and taken up, from funder policies to institutional codes.
Research integrityConduct of research in line with principles of reliability, honesty, respect and accountability, as the European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity sets them out.
Pre-registrationPublishing an evaluation's design and analysis plan before results are known.
09Status

What is open today.

The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. Research enquiries go to research@therisk.global. Integrity rules are on Research integrity. Research on governance is published by The Global Risks Forum (GRF) through its Research Nexus, and on financial systems by The Global Risks Alliance (GRA) on Research and intelligence.

10Questions

Questions and answers.

Can external researchers take part?
Yes, through a research protocol with contribution and rights terms and a publication route that keeps negative findings possible.
Is GCRI research peer reviewed?
Findings are reviewed on method by qualified, conflict-managed reviewers before publication. Each release states its review chain.
Who owns research results?
A rights schedule separates background material, joint results, third-party material and protected community knowledge.

Start with an enquiry.

The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
