GCRI · Global challenges
Society and human development
People feel risk in health, income, education, housing, safety and trust. Population change, migration, inequality and community strength shape how societies absorb shocks and take up opportunity. The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI) studies wellbeing, population, equity and community resilience, so evidence reflects who is affected, and communities take part rather than only being studied. Part of global challenges.
The workspace for society and human development.

Shocks widen gaps that already exist.
Social conditions are not only consequences of risk; they shape it. Strong local institutions, trust and inclusion help communities absorb shocks and recover.
Health, income and learning
Disruptions interrupt schooling, care and earnings, with effects that can last a generation.
Ageing, youth and movement
Demographic change and displacement alter demand for services and the people available to provide them.
Unequal exposure
Those with the least savings, insurance and voice often live and work where risk is highest.

How wellbeing, displacement and equity are measured, with each measure’s limits.
| Concept | Measure and unit | Source and caveat |
|---|---|---|
| Human development | Human Development Index, from zero to one, and its inequality-adjusted form | UNDP Human Development Report 2025; composite, sensitive to weighting |
| Multidimensional poverty | Share of people deprived in a weighted set of health, education and living-standard indicators | Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (UNDP and OPHI); survey years differ by country |
| Population change | Population by age and sex; dependency ratio; projected ranges | World Population Prospects 2024; projections carry probabilistic intervals |
| Forced displacement | Refugees, asylum seekers and internally displaced people, in persons | UNHCR Global Trends; IDMC Global Report on Internal Displacement 2025; counts are estimates, and disaster displacement is counted in movements, not people |
| Social protection coverage | Share of population covered by at least one benefit | ILO World Social Protection data; administrative records vary |
Averages hide the people most at risk. Results are disaggregated by sex, age, disability, location and income wherever sample sizes allow, and where they do not, the page says so rather than reporting a misleading figure.
Model society and human development as a system. Run the cascade.
Assembled from the Nexus Standards area profile Global and systemic risk: the hazards it names, the systems and sectors that carry the loss, the controls that dampen it and the data that observe it. Choose the components, pick an initiating hazard and step through the cascade. The Map view places the run on an example geography with open data. Every coupling weight is a stated assumption you can change. A teaching model, not a forecast, an assessment or a certification. To model a place of your own choosing, open the full System Builder.

Research with people, and the safeguards it needs.
- Surveys and administrative data give coverage but miss people outside registers: informal workers, undocumented migrants, people in institutions.
- Participatory and qualitative methods reach what surveys miss and need informed consent, the right to withdraw and return of findings to participants.
- Indigenous data follow the CARE Principles (Carroll and others, 2020): collective benefit, authority to control, responsibility and ethics. Protected knowledge never enters public examples or model training.
- Small-area estimation produces local figures from national surveys with models, and is labelled as estimated with its error.
Evidence that shows who is affected, for those who decide social policy.
GCRI studies how shocks and transitions reach people, with communities taking part rather than only being studied. It provides no humanitarian assistance and sets no social policy; those belong to authorities, humanitarian organisations and the communities concerned. Field work sits with the Society and Human Development platform.
Findings are designed for the Country Systems Risk and Resilience series and the Evidence Brief series. Contributions that help most come from communities themselves: local accounts of how a shock was absorbed, corrections to how a place is described, and offers to co-design a study.
Evidence with people, under clear safeguards.
- 01
Disaggregate
Results broken down by place, age, gender and income where data allows, using social and behavioural science and spatial statistics.
- 02
Involve communities
Local knowledge and challenge through consent-aware routes, described for communities and civil society.
- 03
Protect knowledge
Protected community and Indigenous knowledge never enters public examples or model training.
- 04
Measure honestly
Effects on wellbeing are evaluated with stated methods, and null or negative results are reported.
Platforms, chapters and counterparts.
Field work runs through the Society and Human Development platform, with chapters on humanitarian risk and displacement and population and demographic futures. The society and human development field gateway links the three institutions. The Global Risks Alliance (GRA) examines economic and social consequences for finance. See also economic transformation.
GCRI’s evidence informs public choices; it does not decide social policy, which remains with competent authorities and the communities concerned.
