01In brief

The short answer.

Energy Nexus research is the evidence work behind the platform: questions such as energy security and power grids and interconnection, answered with energy generation, storage and grid technology as well as power systems engineering and reviewed before publication. Every result carries an evidence label, from observed to modelled or expert judgement, and missing data is shown as missing, never filled silently.

03Geography

Energy demand and corridors in the Black Sea region.

Where demand concentrates in cities and the rail, road and port corridors that move fuel and equipment, shown for the Black Sea region as an example geography for this subject.

05Open questions

What energy research cannot yet answer well enough for decisions.

The energy agenda concentrates on the joints where electricity, gas, water, weather and digital systems meet, because that is where recent large outages and price crises have started.

  • How long and how deep are low wind and solar periods that coincide with high demand, and how should storage and interconnection be sized against them? See renewables and storage.
  • How does heat reduce thermal plant output and transmission capacity while raising cooling demand? See heat and cooling.
  • What does hydropower drought mean for systems that rely on it for flexibility? See hydropower and water.
  • Which restoration sequences bring back power, water and telecoms fastest after a wide-area blackout? See grid disruption and recovery.
  • Where do industrial energy users create concentrated demand and safety risk at the same time? See industrial energy systems.
06Evidence

Every result keeps its label.

Results are labelled as observed, officially reported, estimated, modelled, forecast, scenario or expert judgement. Missing data is shown as missing, never filled silently.

07Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
Research integrityConduct of research in line with principles of reliability, honesty, respect and accountability, as the European Code of Conduct for Research Integrity sets them out.
Evidence labelA tag on an assertion naming the kind of evidence behind it, such as observed, officially reported or modelled.
ReproducibilityObtaining consistent results using the same data and analysis code as the original study.
Supplier concentrationHow far a country's imports of a fuel come from few suppliers, measured with indices such as the Herfindahl-Hirschman index.

10Questions

Questions and answers.

Can I propose a research question?
Yes. Write to contact@therisk.global with the question, the context and who would use the answer. A proposal receives a reference; it does not commit the platform to the work.

The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
