STEM foundation of Food Nexus

The science, technology, engineering and mathematics Food Nexus rests on. Each method has a canonical page in the STEM Commons, hosted by GCRI, and a page here on how it is applied in this field.

01In brief

The short answer.

The Food Nexus STEM foundation is the set of canonical methods its findings depend on, from agricultural, soil and food science to water and environmental engineering. For the Consortium, Food Nexus stewards agricultural, soil and food science. Each method has a canonical STEM Commons page and a page here on its use in the food and agriculture field.

STEM foundation of Food Nexus: food security early warning to early actionMarket prices, crop conditions and rainfall feed a seasonal outlook and a food security analysis by area; projected phases are tested against pre-agreed triggers, and early actions are released before the lean season. Design of the process, not a record of a run.

03Geography

Food systems and trade routes in Pakistan.

Plains, deltas and basins, the corridors that carry food to ports, and how far each division sits from one, shown for Pakistan as an example geography for this subject.

05Method mix

Why food system needs this combination of methods.

Food risk runs from soils and weather to diets, so the method mix spans agricultural science and ecology for production, Earth observation and spatial statistics for where it happens, forecasting for when, econometrics for prices, and optimisation for how scarce supply is allocated. Hydrology and environmental engineering link it to water.

06Why it matters

Grounding makes claims checkable.

When a finding names the methods it depends on, a reader can see its assumptions and limits, and an expert in that method can challenge it.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
STEM CommonsThe shared reference of science, technology, engineering and mathematics methods for the Nexus network, hosted by GCRI, with one canonical page per method and a named steward platform.
Steward platformThe platform that maintains the canonical description of a method in the STEM Commons and reviews how other platforms apply it.
Agricultural, soil and food scienceAgricultural science studies crop and livestock production, soil processes and food systems.
Ecology and biodiversity scienceEcology studies the interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment, from populations to ecosystems.
