Learning and courses

The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI) teaches what its research platforms practise: how risks in water, energy, food, health, nature, infrastructure and technology connect, and how to measure them. It supervises learning in its working groups. It may author courses in its fields, each hosted on Risk Academy, led by the Nexus Consortium that hosts every course, enrolment page and learning record. GCRI never hosts or runs the Academy. No GCRI-authored course is recorded yet. Part of GCRI programmes.

02What GCRI teaches

Subjects drawn from the research platforms.

A GCRI course teaches a subject its platforms work on, with the methods and evidence rules those platforms use. GCRI may author courses in the subjects below, each hosted on Risk Academy. Each subject links to the GCRI pages that describe the work.

Systems

Connected risks

How a shock in one system reaches others: water, energy, food, health and nature, described on the research platforms and the field gateways.

Methods

Science, technology and methods

Statistics, modelling, Earth observation, engineering and decision analysis, the methods catalogued in the STEM Commons.

Evidence

Evidence and its limits

Evidence labels, uncertainty, data rights and review, as GCRI applies them in Reports and Labs.

03Courses

Courses GCRI provides, hosted on Risk Academy.

Risk Academy, led by the Nexus Consortium, hosts every course, page and record, whoever authors the course. A GCRI-authored course is listed here once the Risk Academy curriculum records GCRI as its provider. It links to its page in the Risk Academy course catalogue with the line “Provided by GCRI · hosted on Risk Academy”.

The Global Risks Forum (GRF) and The Global Risks Alliance (GRA) are course providers on the same terms, each with its courses hosted on Risk Academy. The Academy’s own faculties and disciplines are on Risk Academy faculties.

Process

Learning and courses: Programme through eight gates

GRF records eight yearly gates, each a programme decision; a gate not passed stops its work, and the competent authority decides outside.

  1. 01 Q1 · Planning

    1. 01G0 · Annual programme authorisedGate · The Global Risks ForumGRF authorises the annual mandate. It never sets a national agenda.
    2. 03Route the candidate mission to standardsStep · Nexus StandardsNexus Standards routes each candidate mission to the standards and profiles that apply.
  2. 02 Q2 · Readiness and build

    1. 04G1 · Missions admittedGate · The Global Risks ForumGRF admits missions with reasons recorded. It cannot admit a mission without an accountable owner.
    2. 05G2 · Data and resources qualifiedGate · The Global Risks ForumReadiness preparation closes when data, people and resources are qualified.
    3. 06G3 · Build accepted for exerciseGate · The Global Risks ForumGRF records whether the build is accepted for exercise. A gate not passed stops the work it governs.
  3. 03 Q3 · Action Week

    1. 07G4 · Controlled live operation authorisedGate · The Global Risks ForumGRF authorises controlled live operation for Action Week.
    2. 08G5 · Evidence sealed and stand-down recordedGate · The Global Risks ForumThe evidence is sealed with its provenance and the stand-down is recorded.
  4. 04 Q4 · Reporting and renewal

    1. 02Competent authority decides and actsActor · The competent authorityThe competent authority decides and acts under its own rules. The programme informs it and never decides for it.
    2. 09Scientific and editorial reviewStep · Reviewers and the publisherQualified, conflict-managed reviewers and the publisher decide what is accepted. Institutions cannot decide a scientific conclusion.
    3. 10G6 · Publication authorisedGate · The Global Risks ForumGRF authorises publication of results that have passed scientific and editorial review. It cannot publish personal data.
    4. 11G7 · Renewal reviewedGate · The Global Risks ForumGRF reviews renewal and sets the next cycle’s mandate.

The programme year · The Global Risks Forum · Decision rightsDesigned programme process, not a record of operation. No cycle has run and every programme is at service level R0. A gate is a programme decision, never a public-authority approval, certification or deployment authorisation.

05Working groups

Supervised learning in the country programmes.

Leaders

Leadership pathway

A Leadership Baseline, an Annual Leadership Contribution Plan, quarterly work, mentoring and a Year-One Gateway for members of the National Leadership Council (NLC). See Leadership pathway.

Experts

Specialist pathway

Specialist learning, research-software skills and exercise participation for experts in the National Working Groups (NWG). See Working groups.

Students

Supervised pathway

A safe task, a mentor, a learning plan and contribution evidence for students, early-career researchers and volunteers.

Supervised work runs from a capability baseline and a learning plan to bounded work products, a supervisor’s review, a contribution record and a reviewed next step. Never unsupervised high-consequence tasks.

06Boundaries

What GCRI is and is not in learning.

  • GCRI is a course provider for courses it authors. It is not the host or operator of Risk Academy, and the Academy is not a GCRI programme.
  • A learning record is not a professional licence, a qualification or a promise of employment.
  • Ordinary working-group participation has no fee; paid work, internships and fellowships are separate arrangements.
  • Leadership development in the annual programme is described by GRF on Leadership development, and financial-sector learning by GRA on GRA skills and professional learning.

What is open today.

Information and enquiries are open today. No GCRI-authored course is recorded, and no working-group cohort is listed as open. Routes for individuals are on Experts, volunteers and students. See also Guilds and communities of practice.

08Questions

Questions and answers.

Who hosts the courses GCRI provides?
Risk Academy, led by the Nexus Consortium. It hosts every course, enrolment page and learning record, including any course GCRI authors.
Which GCRI courses are open?
None yet. A course appears on this page once the Risk Academy curriculum records GCRI as its provider, with a link to its catalogue page.
Does it cost anything?
Ordinary participation in working groups has no fee. Course terms are set out on each course’s page on Risk Academy.
Can my institution train its staff with GCRI?
An institutional workforce programme is one of the designed entry routes in the working groups. It starts with a capability baseline for the team and a learning plan tied to the institution’s own work, set out in written terms.
How do I ask about learning with GCRI?
Write to the expert application form. The acknowledgement gives a reference and names the next step.

Information and enquiries are open today. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
