Scientific papers

This collection lists scientific papers produced by The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI) and its research collaborations. For each paper it shows the research question, the methods, the authors and their contributions, the review state and the licence, so that readers can judge what kind of evidence they are reading. Papers under review are labelled as such and never presented as accepted findings. Negative and null results are published. This collection is part of the research library.

01In brief

The short answer.

GCRI scientific papers are the papers produced by GCRI and its research collaborations, each listed with its research question, methods, authors and their contributions, review state and licence. Papers under review are labelled as such and never presented as accepted findings, and negative results are published like positive ones.

Draft to published version.

Canvas · draft to published versionDesign, not a record
Scientific papers: systematic evidence synthesisA question is framed with its owner and a protocol registered; records are searched, screened and checked for eligibility by two reviewers; data are extracted, synthesised and graded for certainty before a brief is written. Design of the process, not a record of a run.

Systemic exposure in California.

Where people and networks concentrate, the exposure through which shocks travel between systems, shown for California as an example geography for this subject.

Know what stage a paper is at.

  1. 01

    Preprint

Shared for comment before review. Not an accepted finding.

  2. 02

    Under review

In domain review. Conclusions may change.

  3. 03

    Accepted

Accepted after review by qualified, conflict-managed reviewers.

  4. 04

    Published elsewhere

Published in an external venue, linked to the version of record.

06Topics

What the papers cover.

Papers span the subjects of GCRI's global challenges and science and methods: hazards and climate, interdependent infrastructure, the water, energy, food, health and nature systems, digital and frontier technology, and the methods of risk science itself. Papers can be browsed by field and by method, and each links to the specialist platform that stewards its topic.

07Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
Peer reviewEvaluation of a work by independent experts in the field before publication.
PreprintA version of a paper shared publicly before peer review.
Contributor role statementA structured record of each person's part in a research output, often using the CRediT taxonomy of fourteen roles maintained by NISO.
Null resultA finding of no detectable effect, which still informs future campaigns when published.
08Standards

Integrity behind every paper.

Papers follow the rules set out under research integrity: disclosed funding and conflicts, reproducibility where rights allow, and corrections as recorded versions. Methods are described in methods and technical papers, and experimental findings may also appear in the Labs Evidence series.

Authorship follows contribution. Funding or hosting does not confer authorship or influence over conclusions.

09Questions

Questions and answers.

Can I collaborate on a paper?
Universities and researchers can propose collaboration at research@therisk.global. Authorship, rights and the publication route are agreed at the start.
Why publish negative results?
Because knowing what does not work, or what was not found, prevents wasted effort and biased evidence. Research terms keep negative findings possible.
Are preprints reliable?
A preprint has not completed review. It is labelled as such and should be read with that in mind.
How do I report a problem with a paper?
Write to integrity@therisk.global. The issue is reviewed, and accepted corrections are recorded as new versions.
Are papers open access?
GCRI aims to make its papers openly readable. Where a paper is published in an external venue, the record links to the version of record and to any openly available version its licence allows.

The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
