Space systems for infrastructure

Space systems provide positioning, timing, communications and observation that infrastructure depends on. In this field the concern is dependence on satellite timing and positioning, satellite backup communications, and imagery for asset monitoring and damage assessment.

02Application

What space systems and satellite services does here.

Space systems and satellite services provide positioning, timing, communication and observation from orbit. Many terrestrial systems depend on them, making their disruption a cross-sector risk. In critical infrastructure and cities and built environment, space systems analysis reveals dependencies of finance, power grids and transport on satellite timing and navigation. It supports planning for backups and space weather events. The canonical description is on the STEM Commons.

Timing dependency review

Systems that use satellite navigation signals for timing, such as telecom networks and grid measurement, are identified with their holdover and backup options.

Satellite backup communications

Satellite links available to operators and emergency services when terrestrial networks fail are documented with their capacity and activation steps.

Asset monitoring from space

Radar and optical imagery monitor ground movement near pipelines, dams and embankments, and map damage after events.

06Validation

How results are checked.

Systems are tested on the ground before launch and monitored in orbit. Conjunction assessments and service performance are checked against independent tracking.

CheckHow it is done
Holdover verificationClaimed holdover times without satellite timing are tested
Alternative source reviewAlternative timing sources are identified and their independence checked
Imagery accuracySatellite-based damage and movement estimates are validated in the field

Debris growth, solar storms and interference are hard to forecast precisely. Ground segments and launch capacity are concentrated.

07Simulator

A cascade through interdependent networks.

A hazard footprint takes out co-located assets in every layer; fragmentation, dependency between layers and overload of the survivors then spread the failure. The 3D view separates the layers by depth. Teaching model with stated illustrative values, not a prediction. The map on this page shows Western Europe; the model itself is not tied to a place.
