Research and evidence

Research and evidence is a field in its own right here: how findings are produced, recorded, reviewed and corrected determines whether evidence on systemic risk is fit for those who must act on it.

01In brief

The short answer.

Research and evidence as a field covers how knowledge about risk is produced, reviewed, recorded and published so that it can be trusted, reused and corrected. In the Nexus Consortium it is studied as science at GCRI by Nexus Registry and Nexus Labs as well as governed at GRF by Research Nexus; this gateway links those platforms and the methods they share.

02Geography

Systemic exposure in World.

Where people and networks concentrate, the exposure through which shocks travel between systems, shown for World as an example geography for this subject.

04The systemic question

Evidence that can be traced and corrected.

Cross-sector analysis combines data and models from many sources under different licences, quality regimes and update cycles. Without persistent identifiers, provenance records and version control, a figure in a report cannot be traced to the run that produced it, and an error cannot be followed to the decisions that used it.

  • Persistent identifiers for people, organisations, datasets and outputs.
  • Provenance chains from source to published figure.
  • Correction and retraction practice that reaches downstream users.

08Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
ReproducibilityObtaining consistent results using the same data and analysis code as the original study.
Evidence synthesisThe structured collection, appraisal and combination of evidence from many studies to answer a question.
Research governanceThe rules, institutions and practices that decide how research is commissioned, reviewed, shared, corrected and taken up, from funder policies to institutional codes.
ReplicabilityObtaining consistent results in a new study that collects new data to answer the same question.

Why does GCRI host field gateways?
GCRI hosts the shared references of the Consortium, including the STEM Commons and the field gateways, so each field has one place that links all three institutions' work.

Start with an enquiry.

The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
