The glacier held about 5 million m³ of ice in 2023, and about 3 million m³ was affected when it failed under rock debris.
ICE
A small glacier under load
Residents were ordered out on 19 May. One person who was outside the evacuation zone died [15].
PEOPLE
The village was evacuated first
Insured damage was put at CHF 255 million, of which about CHF 240 million fell within the insurers’ pool. Public reconstruction cost was not retrieved.
LOSSES

B.5Switzerland system card
The card through which Switzerland appears in the Europe regional edition and the global series. It summarises; it does not rank.
| System | Baseline state | Coupling to watch | Coverage |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water | record-low rivers and lakes in 2026 | dry year into hydropower | PARTIAL |
| Energy | hydropower 55.5%; all gas imported | winter supply and storage | GOOD |
| Food | drought loans; rate not bound | drought into farm liquidity | THIN |
| Health | ageing; heat deaths 326 in 2024 | heat load on older people | PARTIAL |
| Biodiversity | a third of species threatened | forest stress and habitat loss | PARTIAL |
Context
- Archetype
- federal, mountainous, high-income economy with Alpine hydropower and large electricity trade
- Population
- 9.13 million (2025)1
- Trade
- electricity imports and exports were nearly equal in 20256
- Hazard
- glacier and rock collapse, Blatten 202514
Switzerland’s card sits beside its neighbours’; shared basins, grids, corridors and supply chains are read as one regional system.
EUROPE REGIONAL EDITION
One regional system
Swiss evidence enters the water, energy, food, finance and climate sector reports through the same finding identifiers, so a correction travels everywhere at once.
GLOBAL SECTOR SERIES
Same findings, same IDs
In the global edition Switzerland is read against peer distributions and thresholds, never placed in a league table.
