Exponential Technology Report 2026: Genomics and Gene Editing
The first annual edition of the genomics report. It fixes the 2026 reference state of genomics and gene editing as infrastructure, and the model, voice and positions, against which the 2027 edition will be read.

01 · Status
Status and boundaries.
This edition governs nothing and certifies nothing. It records where the global evidence stood at the 2026 baseline. Every value resolves to its source or to its stated method; where neither exists, the edition says so instead of filling the gap.

02 · Key messages
What the edition finds.
Five of the questions the edition answers, each with its status. The executive summary has all of them, with their sources.
In two phase 3 studies most evaluable patients met the primary end point at short follow-up.
Do editing therapies work?Reported
The FDA approved Casgevy on 8 December 2023 for patients 12 and older.
Is the approval real?Reported
One infant received a patient-specific base editor in 2025; one case is not a trend.
Can a therapy be made for one patient?Reported
No. A 2023 death after high-dose viral vector therapy and a 2025 liver event show open risks.
Is the safety record settled?Reported
A complete genome of 3.055 billion base pairs and genome releases of 245,388 and 490,640 people.
How large are the data resources?Reported

The edition on a few pages: the abstract, the key messages, the headline finding and what each steward reads in it.
- 1
Chapter 1. Genomics is data infrastructure and a therapeutic frontier
Part I describes systems and their couplings.
- 2
Twelve findings carry the genomics baseline.
- 3
- 4
Chapter 4. Risks and capability
Four genomics risk objects open the portfolio.
- 5
Chapter 5. Individualised editing outpaces delivery systems
A conditional statement under stated assumptions, never a prediction.
- 6
Chapter 6. Readings from the other desks
The genomics baseline is read through each steward’s lens, then once as a whole.
- 7
Eight bounded questions open the 2027 genomics agenda.
- 8
One section per system: its state at evidence close, its exposures and what the operational series will watch.
- A
How the edition was made: methods, the model card, the evidence cut and its age, the acceptance record and the glossary.
- B
The indicator set with its sources, the source registers, the licences of every kind of material and the formats of the edition.
- C
Annex C. References and record
Every source the edition rests on, the publication record, the corrections log and the open record.

04 · GCRI reading
How GCRI reads this edition.
The evidence supports reading genomics as data infrastructure and as a therapeutic technology. Results are strong for one therapy family and for reference data, and the physical, cost and supply layers are thinly measured. Evidence is strongest for single peer-reviewed results, and weakest for energy, cost and treatment counts.

Genomics assistance was used for drafting, consistency checks and page composition. Every number, citation and status label was checked against its source by the editorial team before freeze. No genomics system is recorded as an author or a reviewer, and no genomics output is printed as fact without a source.

Reports is the Consortium’s quarterly publication, written by six desks. This page sits with the GCRI Systems Evidence desk. What you know about this subject can become evidence, a case or a correction in the next edition, credited to you and published under CC BY 4.0 where it is your own work. Sent to the wrong desk, it is forwarded, not refused.
