Exponential Technology Report 2026: Earth Observation and Geospatial Intelligence
The first annual edition of the Earth observation report. It fixes the 2026 reference state of Earth observation and geospatial intelligence as infrastructure, and the model, voice and positions, against which the 2027 edition will be read.

01 · Status
Status and boundaries.
This edition governs nothing and confers no certification. It records where the global evidence stood at the 2026 baseline. Every value resolves to its source or to its stated method; where neither exists, the edition says so instead of filling the gap.

02 · Key messages
What the edition finds.
Five of the questions the edition answers, each with its status. The executive summary has all of them, with their sources.
Landsat 9, Sentinel-2 and NISAR are flying; Landsat 10 is a 2031 target.
Is public land imaging secure?Reported
Landsat, Copernicus and NISAR data are free and open on stated terms.
Is the data free?Reported
Tropical primary forest loss of 6.7 million hectares in 2024.
What does the record show?Reported
GCOS lists 55 variables; coverage by current systems is not bound here.
How much of the climate record is covered?Reported
Counts differ across vendor and agency pages.
Are commercial fleets counted?Reported

The edition on a few pages: the abstract, the key messages, the headline finding and what each steward reads in it.
- 1
Chapter 1. Earth observation is infrastructure and evidence
Part I describes systems and their couplings.
- 2
Twelve findings carry the Earth observation baseline.
- 3
- 4
Chapter 4. Risks and capability
Four Earth observation risk objects open the portfolio.
- 5
Chapter 5. Continuity gap in public Earth observation data
A conditional statement under stated assumptions, never a prediction.

04 · GCRI reading
How GCRI reads this edition.
The evidence supports reading Earth observation as physical infrastructure and as the evidence base for other systems. The public base is strong and free; the successor to the land record is a 2031 target; the footprint of the ground segment is unpublished. Evidence is strongest for mission facts and weakest for energy, workforce and commercial counts.

Earth observation assistance was used for drafting, consistency checks and page composition. Every number, citation and status label was checked against its source by the editorial team before freeze. No Earth observation system is recorded as an author or a reviewer, and no Earth observation output is printed as fact without a source.

Reports is the Consortium’s quarterly publication, written by six desks. This page sits with the GCRI Systems Evidence desk.
