GIS and geospatial

Maps are where risk evidence becomes visible, and where it is most easily misread or misused. This page, published by The Global Centre for Risk and Innovation (GCRI), describes the geospatial capability of Nexus Foundry and publishes public-safe GIS documentation and approved demonstrations as each is released. No map, layer or demonstration is shown until it has passed a public-safe release decision. The current service level is R0: information and enquiries.

01In brief

The short answer.

Maps and GIS in Nexus Foundry is the geospatial capability where risk evidence becomes visible, and where it is most easily misread. The page publishes public-safe GIS documentation and approved demonstrations as each is released; no map, layer or demonstration appears before a public-safe release decision.

02Geography

Land surface in Central Asia.

Surface classes an Earth-observation programme reads: ranges, deserts, glaciers, lakes and reefs, shown for Central Asia as an example geography for this subject.

03Capability

Two systems carry the geospatial work.

Observation

EOP

The Earth Observation Platform federates satellite, aerial, meteorological and in-situ sources behind a catalogue and hands derived layers on with lineage, uncertainty and quality evidence.

Operations

NorthStar

The NorthStar common operating picture layers basemaps, hazard products, incidents, assets and routes for civilian coordination, including offline field work.

04Public-safe release

What is checked before a map is published.

  1. 01

    Source permission

Every layer's licence and the owner's publication decision are on record. Publication never overrides source permission.

  2. 02

    Sensitivity

Restricted topology, critical-infrastructure detail and protected places are removed or generalized.

  3. 03

    People

No layer identifies individuals or exposes communities to harm.

  4. 04

    Meaning

Each map states its method, date, resolution and uncertainty, and what it cannot show.

  5. 05

    Decision

A public-safe decision is recorded before the map reaches the public.

05Current state

No public map or demonstration is released yet.

Documentation and approved demonstrations will be listed here as each is released. Public-safe basin and access maps from field platforms appear on those platforms, such as Water Nexus. The science of geospatial risk analysis is described on GCRI geospatial science and GCRI Earth observation.

NorthStar supports civilian coordination. It is not a dispatch, warning or surveillance authority, and no map on this page is an official warning.

06Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
Coordinate reference systemThe definition that ties coordinates to locations on Earth, catalogued with EPSG codes.
Public-safe releaseA recorded decision on the detail at which a layer may be published without exposing sensitive sites or people.
Spatial data infrastructureThe policies, standards, technology and people that let geospatial data be shared and used.
Modifiable areal unit problemThe change in statistical results that comes from how areas are drawn and aggregated.
07What will be published

Documentation and demonstrations, as each is released.

  • Guides to the geospatial data model: areas of interest, layers, lineage and uncertainty fields.
  • Notes on the open standards used, with worked examples on public data.
  • Approved demonstrations built on public or permissioned data, each with its release decision, date and limits.
  • Corrections to any released item, linked from the item itself.
08Questions

Questions and answers.

Can I download layers from this page?
Only where a released item says so, under its licence. Restricted layers stay inside authorized projects.
Which formats will public material use?
The systems are designed to use open standards such as OGC API Features, STAC, Cloud Optimized GeoTIFF and GeoJSON, so released material can be reused in common GIS tools.
Can a demonstration show my institution's data?
Only with your written permission and a public-safe release decision for the specific use.
How do I report a problem with a map?
Write to integrity@therisk.global. Corrections are published as new versions.
Why is nothing shown yet?
Maps and demonstrations are released only after a public-safe decision. The page does not show illustrative layers presented as real data.
