Nuclear and Radiological Safety is a chapter of Energy Nexus: a specialist sub-community with its own group, editor and research agenda. Specialist nuclear energy safety with regulatory boundaries.
GCRI · Established · service level R0
Nuclear and Radiological Safety is a chapter of Energy Nexus: a specialist sub-community with its own group, editor and research agenda. Its work starts from the cornerstone topic, radiological and nuclear risk. A radiological or nuclear emergency is an event in which radioactive material or radiation creates a hazard to people, food, water or land. A chapter becomes a platform of its own only by meeting the graduation rule.

Questions the chapter works on, starting from its cornerstone topic.
The chapter covers the safety of nuclear facilities against external hazards (floods, earthquakes, heat, grid loss), radiological emergency preparedness and the interface between nuclear safety and the wider energy system. It works at the level of safety frameworks and public evidence.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Ambient dose rate | The radiation dose rate in air at a location, measured by monitoring stations in units such as microsieverts per hour. |
| Protective action | A measure such as sheltering, evacuation, iodine thyroid blocking or food restrictions taken to reduce radiation exposure. |
| INES | The International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale, which communicates the safety significance of events on a seven-level scale. |
| Emergency planning zone | The area around a facility for which protective actions are planned in advance. |
| Chapter | In the Nexus network, a specialist sub-community inside a platform with its own group, editor and research agenda; it can become its own platform only by meeting the published graduation rule. |

The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
