Critical Minerals and Materials is a chapter of Trade and Strategic Resources: a specialist sub-community with its own group, editor and research agenda. Its work starts from the cornerstone topic, critical minerals. Critical minerals are minerals essential to energy, digital and defence technologies whose supply is at risk, such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, graphite, rare earths and copper. A chapter becomes a platform of its own only by meeting the graduation rule.

For critical minerals and materials, in GCRI's spatial-intelligence reading, the map opens on night lights, population density and true-colour imagery with true colour from NASA GIBS, framed on the Strait of Malacca; every other NASA layer, live feed and forecast waits in the layer list.

Questions the chapter works on, starting from its cornerstone topic.
The chapter covers the supply of minerals and materials that energy, digital and defence systems depend on: deposits, mining, refining, recycling and substitution, and the due diligence that responsible supply requires.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Criticality assessment | An evaluation combining a material's economic importance with its supply risk. |
| Refining | Processing ore or concentrate into a material pure enough for manufacturing. |
| Import reliance | The share of a country's consumption of a material met by imports. |
| Chapter | In the Nexus network, a specialist sub-community inside a platform with its own group, editor and research agenda; it can become its own platform only by meeting the published graduation rule. |

The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
