EWS

EWS supports multi-hazard early warning: forecast verification, impact-based warning support and dissemination readiness for the authorities that issue warnings. It issues none itself.

01In brief

The short answer.

Multi-Hazard Early Warning System is the Nexus Foundry system for warning support, from hazard signal and forecast verification to an authority-ready package. It serves 7 platforms, among them Water Nexus and Health Nexus, and its stated limit is that official issuance stays with the authorized warning bodies. Access is through an authorized project with an accountable owner, data terms and a review plan.

02Geography

Disaster exposure and reach in the Andes.

Where response must travel furthest from a large city, with the roads, airports and ports that carry relief, shown for the Andes as an example geography for this subject.

04The problem it addresses

A forecast is not a warning, and a warning is not action.

The warning chain runs from risk knowledge through monitoring and forecasting, dissemination and communication, to preparedness and response. Failures cluster at the joins: forecasts not translated into impacts, warnings that do not reach the last mile, thresholds not tied to action.

  • Verification of forecasts against observations.
  • Impact-based warning support linked to exposure.
  • Readiness of dissemination channels, including CAP.
