Exponential Technology Report 2026: Blockchain and Distributed Ledgers
The first annual edition of the distributed ledger report. It fixes the 2026 reference state of blockchain and distributed ledgers as infrastructure, and the model, voice and positions, against which the 2027 edition will be read.

01 · Status
Status and boundaries.
This edition governs nothing and confers no certification. It records where the global evidence stood at the 2026 baseline. Every value resolves to its source or to its stated method; where neither exists, the edition says so instead of filling the gap.

02 · Key messages
What the edition finds.
Five of the questions the edition answers, each with its status. The executive summary has all of them, with their sources.
A tamper-resistant distributed ledger kept by a network instead of one party.
What is a blockchain?Reported
No. One large network reports 2,601 MWh a year after proof of stake; proof-of-work use is not bound here.
Is the energy question settled?Reported
In the US, reserves of at least 1 to 1 and no issuer interest; in the EU, authorisation under MiCA.
What do stablecoin laws require?Reported
USD 317 billion on 6 April 2026, per the Federal Reserve.
How large are stablecoins?Reported
Most are exploring; three retail currencies are listed as launched.
What are central banks doing?Reported

The edition on a few pages: the abstract, the key messages, the headline finding and what each steward reads in it.
- 1
Chapter 1. Ledgers are settlement infrastructure and a regulatory subject
Part I describes systems and their couplings.
- 2
Twelve findings carry the distributed ledger baseline.
- 3
- 4
Chapter 4. Risks and capability
Four distributed ledger risk objects open the portfolio.
- 5
Chapter 5. Large stablecoin base against uneven rules and theft controls
A conditional statement under stated assumptions, never a prediction.
- 6
Chapter 6. Readings from the other desks
The distributed ledger baseline is read through each steward’s lens, then once as a whole.
- 7
Eight bounded questions open the 2027 distributed ledger agenda.
- 8
One section per system: its state at evidence close, its exposures and what the operational series will watch.
- A
How the edition was made: methods, the model card, the evidence cut and its age, the acceptance record and the glossary.
- B
The indicator set with its sources, the source registers, the licences of every kind of material and the formats of the edition.

04 · GCRI reading
How GCRI reads this edition.
The evidence supports reading distributed ledgers as settlement infrastructure and as a regulatory subject. Statutes and supervisory pages are strong evidence. Energy, reserve composition and illicit share are weak, and vendor figures are labelled as such.

Distributed Ledger assistance was used for drafting, consistency checks and page composition. Every number, citation and status label was checked against its source by the editorial team before freeze. No distributed ledger system is recorded as an author or a reviewer, and no distributed ledger output is printed as fact without a source.

Reports is the Consortium’s quarterly publication, written by six desks. This page sits with the GCRI Systems Evidence desk. What you know about this subject can become evidence, a case or a correction in the next edition, credited to you and published under CC BY 4.0 where it is your own work. Sent to the wrong desk, it is forwarded, not refused.
