01In brief

The short answer.

The Quantum Technologies topics are the eight subject dossiers of its field, among them quantum computing, quantum sensing and quantum communications. Each dossier sets out how the risk develops, what is measured and in which units, the public sources and their licences, the methods, who decides and the limits of the evidence.

02About this section

Topics at Quantum Technologies.

GCRI is a research, development and policy institution. It is not a regulator, and it does not certify, license or approve; its findings carry their methods and uncertainty.

03How the topics fit

How the quantum topics connect.

The topics serve security managers, researchers and policy analysts. They separate the three technology families, computing, sensing and communications, then turn to post-quantum cryptography, materials, workforce, industry and responsible innovation. A reader looks for evidence of capability and for the transition steps that do not depend on it.

The topics separate the three technology families (computing, sensing, communications), then cover cryptography, materials, workforce, industry and responsible innovation.

04Key terms

Terms used on this page.

Each term as this page uses it. Where a standard-setting body defines the term, the wording follows that body.

TermDefinition
Logical qubitA qubit encoded across many physical qubits using error correction.
Atomic clockA clock that uses the frequency of an atomic transition as its reference.
Trusted nodeA relay in a QKD network where keys exist in classical form and must be protected.
ML-KEMA lattice-based key encapsulation mechanism standardised by NIST in FIPS 203.
Two-level system defectA material defect that can absorb energy from a qubit and shorten its coherence.

The current service level is R0: information and enquiries. An enquiry receives a reference and names the next step; applications, payments, compute allocations and registrations open only when their team, terms and review capacity exist.
